Learned some new things here in MI!!

Well it's hard to get GOOD Mexican food up here. The authentic restraunts tone it down a LOT because apparently ppl native to here can't take anything hotter than Taco Bell. (my home town was close to TX )

I learned that ppl really like bland boiled meat and sausages up here. lol

I also REALLY miss Sonics... apparently that restraunt is just a 'red state' thing, because there aren't any here in the midwest (besides southern Ohio) or the New England states!

I learned that even though most of Detroit is a very run down city, there are still some 'nice' parts like the DIA and Greektown.

I learned one only has to go to Bronners to get in a Christmas spirit.

I learned that there are a LOT of malls here (I came from a place where you had to go 80 miles in any direction to get to one ) But, only a few really good ones like the South-something mall (the one with the glass pyramid) , and the Great Lakes Crossing mall.... Briarwood use to be good until they got rid of any 'fun' and unique store in the whole place.. Now it's just one big clothing store..

Come over to the Canadian side there are supposed to be some really great mexican places in the Windsor Leamington Belle River area I am guessing it is because we hire so many mexican's to come up and work the tomatoe farms and other local farms around the area.

My parents eat at a place called Mexican Village. They love Mexican so it must be pretty good. Not sure where it is. I can ask if you'd like.

I happen to find it amusing that I start a thread on Vegas and don't get a whole lot of responses. I start one on Michigan and it seems to have taken on a life of it's own. Up to 7 pages now!! Go figure! It's a good thing though. Nice to see so many others with some sort of ties to MI.

Althoug it seems the majority are in or near Detroit. I'm up in the boonies I guess!!

No. DH is worried, the city threatened to lay off FF & Police to fix the budget if it didn't pass. Seems that facing the choice of selling the golf course or laying off city workers, that they would rather play golf.

The school millage passed. There was a second one for the city that didn't. I guess that what you are talking about. However it was my understanding that there was a projected 3 million dollar defict and it turns out it isn't as bad as they thought it was. It seems like every time a city has $ probelms they threaten to cut back the most important serivces (police and fire) when others (desk jobs ect.... could go 1st.) Sorry to hear about your DH is he a RO fire fighter?


WDWMom, that is what I was talking abut, the base of the Ambasadar bridge. Mexican Village. Very good. There are a few places there. I love the fajitas. Yum.

Don't worry. Where I live is considered the boonies, too. My son goes to school in the middle of Detroit (at UDM) and I feel like he's in a whole nother state!!!

I'm a Michigander by proxy. My dad grew up in Detroit and my DH's family is from the Flint area. We too have a cabin 'up north'. In fact my DH is heading up there Sat. to repair a deer blind before the 15th. The cabin is on M-32 near Hillman right along the Thunder Bay River. (First knuckle of your pointer finger!) We usually get up there a few times in the summer but DH always goes for Hunting season. (Yea! A vacation for me too!) LOL!

A few things I learned about Michigan. It's not a parking garage it's a parking ramp and it's not a patio door/sliding glass door, it's a door wall.
I'm a Hoosier only by address, in my heart I'm a Wolverine! GO BLUE!

Yes! I hope they are able to fix the budget issues without letting any FF or police go, these guys work hard enough as it is. My DH loves his job, they really have a great department there.

Well pass along my appreication. I think the RO fire department is pretty great. We were over at the down town station last year and they gave a demo of the new REALLY BIG ladder truck. Pretty cool!

It's an area in Detroit, where there is a concentration of people from Mexico, rather than an individual restaurant. It's considered to be a nice area of Detroit and like an above poster said, close to the bridge - I think on the west side, but I'm not certain about that.

I've lived in MI my whole life as well and I'll agree with an above poster - there are three Michigans that depend upon where you live. There's metro Detroit, outstate, and the UP. Those areas are totally different from each other down to the weather. And for the record, I say 'soda'

I only read the first 4 pages so far, but I'm curious if anyone live on the soutwest side of michigan. I live in Battle Creek, we just moved here from Kalamazoo, which is where I was born and raised. We only live 12 minutes from our old apartment..

I was racking my brain trying to remember directions to Mexician Village, on the southwest side of Detroit. I did a google seach and it does turn out the street names I remembered was right!

We used to live in MI. Riverview to be exact. I hated the area upon first sight. Nasty roads, stoplights hanging off of wires, a general dirty feel, & driving all over just to get a few errands done. Everything is so spread out in that area. And I HATED the traffic. When I talked to some friends back home they said I talked different. LOL!
If we had lived in, say, Canton I would have been fine. It was like night and day. I am glad to live in WI now.

The snow didn't bother me at all since I have lived in the Midwest (NE & IA) all my life.

We also ate in the Mexican Village. The restaurant was something like El Zocaro's (?). It was really good.
