LeapPad anyone have this on their Christmas List?

A sale or bundle deal would be GREAT! LeapFrog online has a bundle deal. Not a huge savings though =/ If I can get these for under $99 that would be fantastic!

Well I guess I am now. DD said she wanted a Nitendo DS until we went to Target last night and she started playing with the LeapPad. Now she wants one of these because it does more then the DS. She is 7 going on 8 and I know it only goes up to 9 but she loves the fact that it is a camera, video recorder, she can draw, play games, and read books. So I hope there is sale soon. :thumbsup2

Honestly, I'd still get her the DS instead or an iPod touch. I think the novelty will wear off quickly and she will outgrow it rapidly. There are a VERY limited supply of books and games and I don't think it would hold an 8 year old's interest for long. The DS and touch are much more age appropriate and will last longer (as far as how long she will want to use it). The iTouch is more expensive to buy initally, but it will read Kindle books and apps cost considerably less for it than the LeapPad.

I already bought our 3 & 4 year old each a Leap Pad for Christmas. They want one so bad! Our 8 year old saved every penny he had for 2 years and bought his own iPad in June, so the girls really want something similar. He wants a Nintendo 3DS for Chirstmas, and I already bought that for him too. It is more costly than the Leap Pads, but we never buy our kids anything other than for birthdays (one gift) and Christmas, so we spluge a bit at Christmas.

I am green with envy of your 8yr old!! :goodvibes Our family is similar then we do not buy for anything other that b-days and we do a big Christmas. I do take them to pick out 1 small item end of school year for good report cards thats it. We love Christmas =) I think the LeapPad is perfect for the under 7 crowd =)

My DD (6) just received a LeapPad for her birthday and she loves it! My 5 year old DD loves it as well! It entertains them for hours.

Yes, games, leapfrog movies, animal planet shows and books. They also have some full length games that are available in stores that you can dowload instead.

I bought leap pad for my ds4 he abslutely loves it. His leapster explorer games work on it. So far the only two negatives are that it doesn't have a rechargeable battery pack so you have to use batteries although i did hear that you can use store bought rechargeable batteries.
2. There is no way to get already purchased Tag books onto the leap pad. I feel like if i spend $13-20 on a book for his Tag reader i should be able to download a digital copy for the leap pad. Or at least be able to get it at a discount.
Other than that it is a great product. We have leapster 2, leapster explorer Tag and now leap pad and i love them all.

Also, my ds 7 constantly steals my ds4's leap pad so i have two accounts set on it, one for each of them so that it will adjust to their ability levels

I am getting one each for my girls. They'll be just turned 4 and 2.5 at Christmas, and they are already awfully well-versed in technology. They can maneuver daddy's iPad to get to the games they play. I read a review that said the Leappad is more for the 2-6 crowd, not 4-9, especially if the 2 and 3 yr olds use technology a lot.

I'm saving my Amazon gcs right now so I can buy a green one and a purple one with cases. And then we'll tell family who ask to get games for them.

This looks like something my dd7 would like but I'm not sure if she might already be a bit too old for it. I know it says it goes up to age 9 but looking through the apps on the website it looks like most of them are beginning reading, learning letters, beginning math. She is in 2nd grade now but the first week of school tested at a reading level of 3.7 (3rd grade, 7th month) and her math skills are ahead of basic addition/subtraction. Now she would love the ability to take/edit pictures, draw, etc. Does anyone think this might be a good product for an older child?

My son is 7, tested at a second grade level in reading and writing and thrid grade level in math at the end of 1st grade. If you get it make sure she has it set to her grade level and that the difficulty is set correctly. What you are seeing in the demos is the difficulty of the pre-k level. For math there is multiplication and division. For language arts I love the spelling practice and any extra reading my son does helps him so much with increasing his reading speed and fluency. The camera and art studio are timeless, I have even played with and enjoyed those. Some of the apps were easy for ds but he still enjoyed them. Ds six year old friend came over and she was glued to the leappad. I think at seven it is still a great purchase.

Now I am torn. Does the iPod Touch have a camera feature? She really liked that feature on the LeapPad? I wish I could afford to get her an iPad but i just can't. She loves to read, muisc, art, and the occasional video game (has to be pet related). Based on this do you think the Touch would be better for her? I know nothing about them. I guess I better due some more research.

At 7yrs old i would go with the iPod touch. My DD will be 8 in Jan and as neat as the LeapPad is, she is ready for the next level. :goodvibes

Yes. The current (4th generation) ipod Touch has a camera in it.

There may be a new version coming out soon when they release the new iPhone, so I wouldn't buy one yet.
