LeapPad anyone have this on their Christmas List?

We LOVE Leapfrog products and have been fans since the original L-Max came out 6 or so years ago =) I happen to be wondering thru the Toys R Us isles last week while shopping for a gift when I seen the LeapPad WOW! Ive read some great reviews and it looks like a kid version of an Ipad =) The prices Ive seen is around $99 and for those that have the Leapfrog Explorer the games work on the LeapPad as well.

Last year all of our kids wanted Ipod Touches but it was not in our budget, this year we were going to go ahead and buy the oldest 2 daughters 9 & 7 Ipod Touches, our son who will be 6 in Dec a Nintendo XL or 3D depending on which one had a better deal closer to Christmas, and our 4 yr old a Leapster Explorer well until I seen this =) I am considering purchasing a LeapPad for my 6year old instead of the Nintendo DS? Any thoughts? I have never been impressed with the games that Nintendo has eductional wise unless theres some I have missed?

I found that my son age 6 outgrew his Leapster too fast. I have not seen the LeapPad though. He does however love to use the LeapFrog Tag Reader. All three of my boys (19, 16, 6) have loved their DS, and they still all play them on car rides, waiting at restaurants, etc...I myself have one...love the puzzle games. I do agree there are not very many educational games but if you think of puzzle games as educational there are plenty. Great brain games. I have heard mixed reviews about the 3DS which we dont have. Headaches, blurry, bad battery life.

My dd is 6 and uses her lepaster daily. We are getting both the girls leappads. I figure even if she gets 2 more years tops out of it. It is educational and that is what I like. I'm hoping for a leapfrog bundel deal like they did on the explorer. I'm gald we didn't get the explorer last year and waited now.

My son 7 and daughter 4 have this and play with it daily. You can set the leapster to their grade level and that adapts some of the games to their skill level. They have apps that have up to a 3rd grade level as well as games that go up to 9. My son adores it as much as my daughter. He has a ds and likes it too but he had been playing with his leappad more lately. I put a bunch of apps on it and his favorite games so far are pet pals 2, Ben 10 and Cars 2. He also likes to create movies with the drawing app that comes with it. Also a neat thing is that if you buy apps or games online through their app store then you can download it to both your kids systems. This is great for us as our kids used to fight over who got to play pet pals or Mr. Pencil first. Now both games are downloaded to each of their systems so they can play at the same time. Their old leapster would glitch all the time but the leappad has been flawless. We it.

I think I will have to research this LeapPad. So I assume as you say app you mean I could download differnt content that is not available to purchase in stores...so bonus games and such...kinda like apps for ipods? Is the LeapPad similar in size to the Leapster?

Yes, games, leapfrog movies, animal planet shows and books. They also have some full length games that are available in stores that you can dowload instead.

Hmmm...I can't decide about this one. My DS5 never was that interested in the Leapsters, he went right to a DS (used) at age 3. He still plays that a lot. He has always been a little ahead on electronics. I think from hanging around older cousins and stuff.

I think he would like the leappad right now but we are thinking of getting an iPad as a "family" gift. I don't know if the leapad would hold too much appeal to him if we also have an ipad at home (which he would be allowed to use with supervision).

I really like the option to share the games between 2 LeapPads! My kids are always fighting over their games Toys R Us has a buy 2 Leapster Games get 1 free I didnt think that deal was too bad, but I am also looking at buying an app card. Are the app prices reasonable? I checked out LeapFrogs store but I can not get any price info without downloading the store. I am at work browsing the internet is allowed but downloading is an absolute NO NO. If I buy the actual games can those be then downloaded onto the LeapPads? Over the last 6 years I believe we at one point have owned almost ALL of the L-Max games every Christmas and B-day my parents would purchase a few games to add, well we are down to maybe 3-4 games after we moved last year my husband donated BAGS and BAGS of toys so things that we should have kept went out the door. I really like the downloading of the games so theres nothing to loose. Is there a stylus? is it attached? MOVIES? Really that is awesome I understand they are just LeapFrog ones but still that is a huge upgrade from the L-Max.

This looks like something my dd7 would like but I'm not sure if she might already be a bit too old for it. I know it says it goes up to age 9 but looking through the apps on the website it looks like most of them are beginning reading, learning letters, beginning math. She is in 2nd grade now but the first week of school tested at a reading level of 3.7 (3rd grade, 7th month) and her math skills are ahead of basic addition/subtraction. Now she would love the ability to take/edit pictures, draw, etc. Does anyone think this might be a good product for an older child?

She got a DS last year and plays with it on and off. She does spend a lot of time playing games on the laptop/desktop though and loves reading books.

Tracing letters and following simple directions worked out great. The LeapPad from what I read is a really suped up version of the L-Max and Leapster Explorer. Something a 3yr old could grow into =)

I had to break it slowly to my husband. I really talked it up before the price came up, I reminded him how much we spent last year on each kid and many gifts went to the donate box by spring! My husband hates spending money and wasting money makes him ill!! So I reasoned the 1 large gift for each kid and then a few $1 store items along with things they actually need like PJs or shoes and things for their room. Worked on my hubby lol good luck you have 3 months to convince him.

I like your way of thinking. DS's birthday is in November and we are spending a huge amount on his party. Maybe I can coinvince DH that the Leappad is an apporiate potty training gift.

You might also want to consider the regular (not Junior) tag. It will read the Junior books she already has the same was the Junior, but then she'd be able to transition to the regular paper books as well.

The LeapPad has a e-reader type application on it... Im pretty excited about this lol I havent even showed my kids this yet.

Well I guess I am now. DD said she wanted a Nitendo DS until we went to Target last night and she started playing with the LeapPad. Now she wants one of these because it does more then the DS. She is 7 going on 8 and I know it only goes up to 9 but she loves the fact that it is a camera, video recorder, she can draw, play games, and read books. So I hope there is sale soon.
