Le Cellier for vegetarian/vegan??

OMG, I had no idea there was gelatin in creme brulee! ...good thing I've never tried it!

I know! I was a vegan for about 5 years and was shocked at how many things had some sort of animal product in them. Almost all desserts that have that consistency that creme brulee or flan have, have some type of gelatin in them.

You should ask the chef. Creme brulee is super easy to make. The creme is cream, eggs, sugar and flavoring. Usually vanilla. It's a simple custard. It translates to burnt cream, (I think). The burnt part is a sugar crust on top. It's sugar that's melted with a torch or, for the purists, a brulee iron or salamander.

I could see someone creating a gelatin based creme brulee but the texture would be very different, and I would hope this wouldn't happen in any good restaurant.

It's a great dessert, and if you eat dairy, it's definitely worth asking the chef about. They're always willing to come out and answer questions.

BTW, flan is also called creme caramel and the sauce is made a little differently, but the custard base is the same.

Thank you. I just looked up recipes online and those were gelatin based. I'm sure the chefs at Disney do things the right way.

Interesting, I checked the recipe exchange & all the WDW recipes for creme brulee did not have gelatin. Additionally, I checked cooks.com and e-how for creme brulee recipes and those also didn't have gelatin. Maybe there are cooks out there that use gelatin in creme brulee but it appears they are the minority. Granted they DO have cream and eggs so they are NOT vegan. I would just ask the chef about it.

I am vegan, and I've had several excellent meals at Le Cellier. Just tell your server and usually the chef will come out and discuss options with you. The gnocchi can be made vegan and is EXCELLENT! They also gave me some coconut ice cream for dessert (made with coconut milk) and I actually called my server back to ask him if he was SURE it was vegan because it tasted so creamy and rich!

As a vegan, I LOVE eating at WDW. I have had outstanding meals everywhere and the chefs always seem happy to prepare food that will meet your needs.

And here's a tip for people who want to eat at Le Cellier but couldn't get ADRs. My two youngest sons are working there right now, and told me that your best chance is to wait for a day with horrible weather (rain, ideally) and then stop by Le Cellier to see if there are no shows or cancellations. It's on those bad weather days that they are most likely to have an opening.

That's what I was thinking. Panna Cota sometimes does because it is served cold, but I've never heard of it in creme brulee, and in high school a friend's mom used to make flan all the time and it never included gelatin.

FYI-Just back and requested through special diets a vegetarian version of onion soup AT chefs de France. :cloud9: It was SO good.

And the macncheese!!!!! DS loved it and he usually likes the orange stuff. Said it was the best! it's creamy with nutmeg in it.

A vegetarian couldn't eat the creme brulee and a vegan couldn't eat either. Dairy in both and gelatin in the creme brulee. ;)

I've never heard of Creme Brulee being made with gelatin. If it's real, there should not be any gelatin in it.

The tomato stack at Le Cellier was pretty good. It has some blue cheese crumbles, but they would be easy to leave off if you really want to stay vegan.

It may or may not be vegan, but the pretzel bread is soooo good. I'm guessing it might have whey in it? :confused3

I have had two FANTASTIC vegetarian meals at Le Cellier. Yes, it is a steak house, but they are very accommodating. I wouldn't hesitate to go.

The first time, I wasn't sure about some of the sauces on the one veg entree, and the chef came out and talked to me. They were served on the side, but the sauces were still fantastic. The second time, there was a butternut squash ravioli dish, and I'm not a fan of butternut squash. So, again, the chef came out and told me what he could do instead. Again, fantastic.

As a side note, they accommodated DD, too. She didn't like anything on the kids' menu (she was 3), and they made the best grilled cheese that I've ever tasted. They just had us choose from what they had in the kitchen (English muffin and Canadian white cheddar). I was so impressed how they accommodated her, and I still dream about that sandwich.

We are going again next week! DH is not a vegetarian, and he really enjoys LC, too.

Even though it could change (and seems to seasonally), check the menu and you can get an idea.

Enjoy!

I had that butternut squash ravioli and it was delicious.

I was also going to point out that the menu changes seasonally, so don't be surprised if the posted veggie items are not available when you get there. There typically is a vegetarian (probably not vegan) entree on Le Cellier's menu, though.

Mousse often does have gelatin in it. Custards typically don't. :)

How did you request the vegetarian version? How do you contact special diets? I would LOVE to have that! We've loved the mac n cheese, too, but it is SO rich---looks like a small serving but always feels like way too much.

Le Cellier's entrees are usually not vegan but easily made vegan---I think we've often been asked. It's usually just omitting some cheese. Although I wasn't as impressed by the current gnocchi (it was fine but not up to the standard LC had set in previous visits), I do think the chefs give it a good amount of thought.
