You may call me an uncultured swine (just like Hamm in TS) if you like, but I don't believe I've ever actually had truffles. I have heard people advise NOT to order the Mushroom Filet at LeCellier if you don't like the taste of truffles because they are very strong in the dish. I'm a big fan of good ol' mushrooms, but I don't actually know if I like the taste of truffles. I had planned to get the Mushroom Filet on our next trip, but now I'm concerned. Any more-cultured-than-I people out there that can advise on the taste of truffles versus mushrooms? TIA!!

And Merry Christmas!! :goodvibes

I don't like mushrooms either, but my DH ordered the mushroom filet last time we were at Le Cellier and after I tried his dish, I wish I had ordered the same! It was delicious! Mushrooms alone still don't do much for me, but they definitely complimented the flavor of the steak.

I have been to Le Cellier many times and I have not recalled seeing truffles as part of the Mushroom Filet. The only mushrooms that are really there are the ones in the risotto that comes with the dish. There might be a few small mushrooms for garnish but the dish is not covered in them.

I reccomend trying the flavor before you go. I've not had the truffle fillet there, but I might in two weeks :dance3: At that point I can get back to you on how "truffley" it is.

To try before hand go to a local grocery store with a gourmet department, and get some truffle oil. This will set you back a bit ($10-20), but it is great for dipping bread, or as a salad dressing. My favorite way to taste truffles is to buy some cheese with truffles (tartufo). Many stores offer it, but it is cheaper (and generally better, to order it online. To taste the truffle the most, you will want to stick with a young cows milk. If you like earthy/gamey cheese, a sheep's milk is best (though it covers up some of the pure truffle flavor. Here are two I personally recommend: Cows Milk with Truffle - can be ordered in 8 ounce.

Sheep and Cow's milk

Hope this helps.

At the price of truffles, I doubt Le Cellier is using much, if any. They may be using a bit of truffle oil. Truffles have a very delicate flavor and the mushrooms would overpower them anyway.

From what I remember, the truffles are in the sauce that they pour over your filet. I had never had truffles either, so a white truffle sauce kind of panicked my picky eater self. I just asked for the sauce on the side. I don't know if it really tastes like truffles, but it's fabulous! Much better than my standard, aka A1 sauce. :rotfl:

I got the sauce on the side - glad I did b/c I didn't really like it. You could always just try dipping your steak in the sauce and then if you like it, drizzle it everywhere!

That sounds like a perfect solution....I get to try it but I don't HAVE to try it!

Thanks for the input!

The truffles are in the sauce which is drizzled over the steak. I asked our waiter and he said it was truffles and butter with some other herbs thrown in. Now, I'm not a mushroom fan, but I love this. I need to find the recipe.

I asked for mine with no mushrooms and subbed mashed potatoes. My dd asked for hers the same but with the sauce on the side and I'm glad she did because she didn't care for it. I didn't want to waste it so I poured hers over my steak as well - I loved it.

I just had this dish for the first time on 12/17. There weren't any actual pieces of truffle in it, but the sauce is a White Truffle Butter, and I thought it was really strong. I like Truffles so I enjoyed it, but if you've never had it before, I second the idea of ordering the sauce on the side.

Truffles are somewhat similar to mushroom flavor in that they're both 'earthy', but truffles are much stronger and more potent. You smell it more and the aroma kind of hangs in your mouth longer. Maybe it's just me, but when I bite in to a piece of truffle, I don't actually feel the taste of what I'm touching, but the truffle flavor permeates whatever it's cooked with and all the parts in my mouth taste of truffle. If that makes any sense. :upsidedow

Considering that fresh white truffles are about $4,000-$10,000+ per pound this year ($300-ish for one small truffle), I'm sure Le Cellier is using white truffle oil. Most commercial truffle oil contains "truffle essence" or "truffle extract" which is a chemical compound that smells and tastes somewhat like white truffles. Some truffle oil is the real deal, but it is also very expensive. Restaurants serving real white truffles charge $50-$100+ per person extra for a few shavings of white truffles on top of their food.

So if you haven't had truffles before eating at Le Cellier, you probably won't have had them after eating there, either! Used sparingly, truffle oil can be a delicious addition to certain dishes. We had it drizzled on our mac-n-cheese for Christmas Eve dinner.

In March, I ordered this without mushrooms, sauce on the side and with french fries. OMG...I thought I had died and gone to steak heaven. The sauce was heavy so I'm glad I was able to dip into, but it was great on the steak and even better on the fries. I didn't find it very truffly (I'm picky and loved it), but definitely buttery and rich.

We had the mushroom filet at LeCellier -- it was terrible! Soup was great -- but we won't go back to LeCellier.

Merry Christmas to you too!

I'm a pretty uncultured swine, too, and I had the mushroom filet at Le Cellier for the first time last time we were at Disney. I LOOOOOVED it and will definitely have it again next time! I don't remember being shocked by any strong flavor, just loved it!:thumbsup2

We were at Le Cellier Dec 15 and I got the filet. It was horrible. I ate maybe 2 bites- the meat was super tough and the wild mushroom risotto, white truffle and herb butter sauce was gummy and nasty. I was beyond dissapointed. This was our hardest reservation to get. Dh had the prime rib and even cooked rare it was very tough. DD had the kids steak and it was tough. The pretzel bread was awesome but did not make up for the "jerky" like steaks. I wish I had ordered chicken instead.

Truffles sounds more like something Yachtsman Steakhouse would do and not Le Cellier. Yachtsman has pricy but excellent meals.
