Introduction:
This trip report is written by me (Lisa). I took my 12 year old sister, Diamond (Di) with me to Disneyworld for 5 wonderful days. We stayed at the Grand Floridian in room 5144 (Sago Cay building with a wonderful view of the castle, lake and monorail). I call my report LC on the DL at the GF because Im on the South Beach Diet and I was determined to stay on plan but not make a big deal about it or stress over it, hence my title low carb on the down low at the Grand Floridian. I had a hard time finding trip reports or comments from people that were low carbing while on vacation at Disney so Ive included as much low carb info as I can.
Sunday, June 6, 2004 - Day 1 or All I could do was smile
DH and DS drove me and Di to the airport on Sunday morning about 10:00 a.m. We had an uneventful flight that left at 12:36 but it was a bit bumpy and we met our towncar driver at the airport about 3:00 pm. Our driver was nice but his accent was so thick we couldnt understand him. Once we got to the hotel and I mentioned how chatty our driver was, Di commented that she couldnt understand a single thing he said and all she could do was smile and nod her head.
We were dropped off at the Grand Floridian where I havent stayed since 2000 and Di was suitably blown away by its sheer beauty and so was I. Then began our true Disney vacation, I paid and tipped our towncar driver, then tipped the CM that took the 2 bags out of the trunk of the towncar and walked them 20 feet. Another CM took us to our room and put the two bags in the rom for us and we tipped him and that folks is how I knew I was officially on my Disney vacation! At check-in we had a nice CM who informed us we were given the upgrade I had asked for (nicely) in my fax to the room assigner. I asked for non-smoking, with a MK/lagoonview. We got it! Room 5144 was our home for the next five days. The room was spacious and pretty with two double queen beds, a daybed, table and 2 chairs and a bathroom with wonderful toiletries (not the typical Mickey soaps and lotions) and a double sink outside the toilet, tub/shower room. Our room was located all the way toward the back of the building and we used the back exit quite frequently.
We unpacked, delighted in our view, checked out the patio with the two chairs and table then hopped on a bus in the rain for Downtown Disney. We shopped at World of Disney (I was on a mission to bring back souvies for a group of young people), looked through the Home Store and Team Mickey store. Di bought a Mickey golf ball for our uncle and I was able to find just about all the souvies for the kids I was looking for as well.
I had called ahead and made a reservation at the RFC for dinner at 7:00 p.m. and Im so glad I did. The wait time was an hour and a half without a reservation and even with one we werent seated until close to 7:30. There was a huge line just to get to the podium and then another line inside the restaurant to be seated. We ate in the Gorilla Room. It was neat! We were sat by the fish tank and saw Dora and Nemo swimming by. We also had the best waitress. She was so friendly, personable and accommodating to us. She helped to make our evening great. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and did not realize the chicken was served cold. I mentioned how disappointed I was to our waitress and she went and had the cook make me up a plate of chicken that was grilled hot and did not charge us. I thought that was so sweet of her and she got an extra tip for being so thoughtful!
We thought the atmosphere in the restaurant was just so much fun. Between the animatronic animals and the wait staff that would yell Volcano whenever someone would order the volcano dessert, we had a ball!
For dinner Di had a big cheese and pepperoni pizza with a sprite and our total for dinner was about $37 with tip. Di gave the food at RFC a solid 9" out of 10 stars for her dining review.
After our dinner at RFC we returned to our room in time for the fireworks. But first we stopped at Gaspiralla Grille (GG) for ice cream. Di got cookies and cream and I got a bottle of water. The total was about $6. I asked about any sugar free offerings and they had Haagan Daaz fat free, sugar free ice cream. I got a bowl of that and sprinkled some chopped nuts on it. It was very good! The ice cream was about $3.75 for the small bowl.
Now on to the fireworks. We relaxed and enjoyed our treats as we waited for 10:00 for the fireworks to start. I had not seen wishes before. I knew I would like it but was not prepared to be awed by this show. We had the most perfect view from our room. We were dead center of the castle and this first night I sat out on our patio and enjoyed the show so much I didnt notice that the biting bugs of Orlando had decided to make a buffet dinner out of me (and some came back for dessert). But back to the fireworks, they were spectacular. We did have an occasion to watch them from BTRM later in the week and that was wonderful but I dont think anything can beat seeing them for a distance and being able to take in such a panoramic view as we were fortunate enough to have. Me, Di and several of our neighbors signed and clapped during this fantastic display. I am so grateful we had that upgrade and could watch those beautiful fireworks just about each night from our amazing room.
The only real downer about today is that it started to rain (and would rain every day of our trip) about 5:00 and didnt stop until just before the fireworks. We both read our mystery novels for a bit and it was lights out by midnight.
In case you are wondering how I can remember all these details, I decided for the first time ever to take really good notes each day. It wasnt the bother I thought it would be. Its fun remembering all these things now that Im home and can read over my extensive notes. Sometimes I would pull out my small pad and start jotting things down as they happened. Im used to keeping a daily journal on the WISH board so it wasnt a bother to do this at all. I definitely think Ill keep notes on each day from now on when I take a Disney trip.
Im going to list what I ate and if I exercised in keeping with the journal I have on the WISH board so if this doesnt interest you, please feel free to skip this section:
Food for the day:
B: 2 scrambled eggs with a slice of low fat cheese, 3 small sausage patties and ½ bowl of whole wheat cereal (at home)
L
on the plane) turkey sandwich (I left the bun) with a lettuce leaf and mayo plus a diet cola - I was really surprised to see they served Atkins Endulge bars (Vanilla Creme) with the meal. Ive never had one and it was delicious! Di gave me hers as well and I ate it later in the week as dessert.
D: (Rain Forest Café) I had a grilled chicken salad, toppings off two slices of Dis giant cheese and pepperoni pizza and a diet cola
Exercise: The FIRM Super Cardio Sculpt
Weigh in: Today was my weekly weigh in day and I lost 2 pounds for the week bringing my total to 63.5 pounds! My goal is to maintain if not lose at least a pound when I return from Disney and weigh in again on Sunday, June 13.
Tomorrow were off to Animal Kingdom and Epcot.
Monday, June 7, 2004 - Day 2 or The Turnstyle Hokey Pokey
I was up at 5:30 but didnt get out of bed until 6:15. Mickeys call came right on time at 6:15 and I had to put the phone to Dis ear so she could hear Mickey cheerfully inviting us to the parks. I put on my work out clothes and we headed to the health club. After taking the walking path for a few minutes and not spotting the building, we turned around (saw bunnies and ducks along the way), and went back to the main building and asked for directions. Of course we were headed in the right direction and just didnt take the path far enough. After signing a waiver for both me and Di we jumped on the treadmills. I did 26 minutes and I spent 6 of those minutes actually jogging. That is a first for me! I felt so powerful, fit and like a normal personal despite being the largest one in the room. There were about six others besides me and Di working out. After the treadmill, I went over to the free weights and spent 5-10 minutes using the 2.5 and 5 pound weights. What a great way to get your day started!
We went back to our room to shower and get dressed for our first park of the day - Animal Kingdom! Unfortunately, we missed most of EMH and stood in the grueling 40 minute stand by line for the Safari at 9:05. We had a great driver but didnt see too many animals. Boy, was it hot!!! It was nice to see a lion resting in the shade though. We grabbed a couple of fast passes at Dinosaur as we made our way to Donalds breakfast for our 10:15 priority seating.
Our waitress was Robin and she was great. I was a bit disappointed in the set up of the buffet (lack of variety compared to when we ate there last time) and the absence of the made to order egg station like we experienced two years ago. It was still a good breakfast and Di dubbed it her favorite because of visits from Mickey and the hashbrowns! She gave the hashbrowns an 11" out of 10. Considering that Im on SBD it was an expensive egg and bacon breakfast at about $41 with tip but was worth it for Di to be able to meet Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto on her first park day. In addition to eggs and bacon, I had sausage and yummy cottage cheese with slices of peaches. I had milk to drink and Di had apple juice. They take your picture before you go to breakfast and then offer you a package while you eat. I was very hesitant to pose for this picture knowing how huge I would look in the photos. Sometimes I do forget that I have lost about 65 pounds. Anyway, the pics turned out really nice and even standing next to my thin 12 year old sister, I looked pretty good. I was happy enough with the pics to buy the package for around $25 which included 2 8x10's, a large keychain pic, 2 wallets and a nice sized magnet. Di and I are splitting the 8x10's, she is keeping the keychain, Ill keep the magnet, I am giving one wallet to one of my sisters and probably will give the other wallet to our Mom.
After a filling breakfast and hugs and pics with all the characters, we headed to Dinosaur to use our fast pass. It was an awesome ride. Di was sufficiently scared and thrilled at the same time. We stood in the stand by line for Primeval Whirl and it was fun but not quite worth a 25 minute wait. We rode with a father and daughter that were pretty funny. The father kept saying he was going to throw up in his hat! We were both fading after this ride as it was about 2:00 in the afternoon and the sun, heat and humidity was brutal. It always seems 10 degrees hotter at AK than any other park. We bailed and headed back to our beautiful room, but reluctantly as I wanted to see the Tarzan Rocks show (havent ever seen it) but we just couldnt stand on our feet any longer. It was mostly me because I had some foot problems before we left home and they reared their ugly heads big time after being on my feet at the parks for hours at a time. I tried blister block and bandaids and nothing really seemed to help.
We planned to spend some quality time at the main pool at the hotel but we were too tired and lazy to change into swimsuits so we enjoyed the AC instead. We did make a quick stop at GG so I could get a piece of fruit and I had the worst orange I have ever eaten ($1.19). I ended up throwing half of it away and later in the trip when I mentioned it to a CM, she told me if it was that bad, I should have said something and they would have refunded my money. Just an FYI for anyone that gets their hands on some nasty fruit. Dont be like me, return it!
We napped about an hour and half and then headed to Epcot for the evening about 5:00. When we got to Epcot we road Spaceship Earth with no wait and worked out way back to Mission Space. I was terrified of riding it after what I had read on the DIS. The warning signs and the Cms outside the ride warning certain people not to ride did not make me feel any better. We got our assignments and were securely in our capsule for take off and I thought this ride was awesome!!!! Im so glad I didnt chicken out. I loved being the Pilot and doing my part to get us safely to Mars. There were several people that got sick on it afterwards so you should head the warnings if you think you might get sick. We loved it and planned to go on it again at least one more time before the trip was over.
I still havent seen Illuminations even though Ive been on at least six trips and this trip kept that streak going. It stormed from about 8:00 pm on so we ate dinner at Liberty Inn in the America pavilion and headed back to our room. Di gave Liberty Inn a 4" out of 10 rating. I had a double cheeseburger (sans bun) with fruit salad instead of fries and a diet coke in a souvenir mug with references to Epcot and some of the characters on it so that was a treat. I particularly enjoyed the long black hair in my fruit salad - not! Di had chicken fingers and fries. She said the ends of the chicken fingers were hard and the fries werent that good. My burger was tepid at best but we were starving so we didnt complain. This counter service feast came to about $20. I would change my tune about not complaining about a bad meal later in the trip though.
Before we left the park, we stopped by the bakery in Norway and I picked up a sugar free mousse cup to take back and enjoy during the fireworks at our room. They packed it up to go for me and it was very good. Di got a strawberry cheesecake type dessert and she said it was slamming which is teen speak for very very good. I think the treats were about $3 each.
We sloshed back to our room through the rain and once back in our room, spent some time shopping in the gift shops at the Grand. We stopped in GG for a bottle of water for me and an ice cream treat for Di. We were soon rewarded with a second night of the awesome Wishes fireworks! I could watch them every night and notice something a little different about them each time. I remember feeling so fortunate to be seated comfortably in my chair, with wonderful dessert, my wonderful sister and the awesome fireworks. Of course the best part was watching them from the AC in our room - I wasnt taking a chance on being on the dessert menu for any bugs lurking on our patio tonight!
I called home to talk to DH and DS and then called two of my sisters and chatted for a bit. I forgot to mention the turn down service that the Grand provides. It was so nice to return to our room in the evenings to find our beds pulled down, the lights dimmed, chocolates on our pillows and the tv turned to the bedtime story channel. The first time it happened Di was worried that someone had been in our room without our knowledge. I had to tell her it was part of the service of the hotel. She was suitably impressed again. She said she didnt like the chocolates. I took mine home to DS and he said the same thing, that he thought they were nasty. Oh well.
We spent about an hour post-fireworks reading our books and just enjoying our room. I updated my trip notes and it was lights out about midnight.
Food for the day:
B: bacon, eggs, sausage, cottage cheese, peaches, milk
L: no real lunch but ½ an orange, and a couple sugar free chocolates with a couple of bottles of water
D: double cheeseburger (no bun), diet cola and sugar free chocolate mousse for dessert
Exercise: 26 minutes on the treadmill and 5-10 minutes with free weights
Tomorrow were off to Epcot, MGM and MK, see ya on Day 3!
