Several rumors have said that a bunch of imagineers have been let go within WDI. This includes big name imagineers such as Tom Fitzgerald (lead of Epcot) and Joe Rohde (lead of marvel and AK).

Personally I don't buy that they let joe go since he was just put in charge of marvel and made the announcement of guardians at DCA.

Wow, I really hope this is not true. I agree, he is in charge of that as well Pandora. If this is an early retirement for both of them I would hope Disney would do everything they could to keep them on.

Without Joe I fear that AK will become an IP park just like the rest of them. I know Pandora is incredibly over budget but if true he won't even get to see it through to opening.

Very good point, I didn't even think about that. I guess we can hope for the best but the way things are going, with these rumors becoming true, this is horrible. Oh and of course I don't want to forget about all the other imagineers laid off. This whole thing is very sad.

Sadly I can see this as being a true story. I think we have seen a battle between the board and Imagineering and firing people is a way to handle such a dispute. Especially Joe while I think he has done his jobs in recent years I think he was doing it begrudgingly. I do hope they don't outright fire Rhode though and instead set up a retirement date for him. I know Universal Creative is still growing so I wonder if they are gonna go after these guys like they did long ago.

Of course this is all rumors, but if we are to believe the article - it sounds more like a case of "voluntary layoffs", which essentially means if you are approaching retirement, you can choose to "take the package" and get some sort of severance. At 61 it's not impossible he could be thinking about retirement. He's probably made a whole pile of money.

Another point - someone at that level does not get "laid off". They choose to leave to "explore other creative opportunities" or they "retire".

Lost in the Joe Rohde discussion... What does this mean?

With Shanghai finishing, and Star Wars land and Toy Story land developed, a few overlays in place... apparently someone felt they were too "heavy". Which would also imply that what is coming up is either smaller, less challenging, etc. It would lead one to believe we are not embarking on a new era of continuous change in the parks, but rather reaching the end of a surge of expansion.

Or, you know, they might have just had some dead weight.

My guess is they want to clear up some of the high salaried imagineers. The big time imagineers make big time money that Disney doesn't want to pay anymore.

Small time imagineers make small money and small decisions. But we've been around and around these types of discussions. When stock price, ROI, and shareholder returns become the true objectives these are the decisions that are made.

I could see Disney trying to reduce the size of Imagineering, but I'm not sure about all the drama some people have been trying to inject into the story. We keep hearing about how almost every project exceeds its already inflated budget, so I'm sure Burbank is anxious about reducing costs.

Who knows though, maybe there's something big going on at Imagineering as we speak.

I would say, probably "something big going on". There must be more imagineering projects happening right now than there has been for 10 years or more.

Even more new projects will probably have to be initiated at WDW if Uni announces its plans for park III.

No doubt we'll here more about it ...

Maybe this is cutting back on the teams who worked on Shanghai DL.

Yes I read a lot of these imagineers worked on Shanghai.

Disney officials confirmed Friday that there have been staff reductions this week at Walt Disney Imagineering, the arm of the Walt Disney Co. that designs its theme parks.

The reductions were accomplished at the Glendale-based company through a combination of voluntary departures and layoffs.

Imagineering increased its staff while working on Shanghai Disneyland, which opened in June. It employed more than 2,000 designers and engineers around the world before the reductions.

“Walt Disney Imagineering is a project-based organization, and we continually evaluate and adjust our resources to support the design and development of Disney theme parks, resorts and experiences around the globe,” said a Disney spokesman.

As part of the reductions, voluntary severance packages were offered to senior staffers, those with longer terms of service or nearing retirement, Disney said.

Beginning Wednesday, others were laid off. Disney would not say how many were let go, saying only that the number of layoffs was a low single-digit percentage.

The design company is also undergoing a reorganization under Bob Weis, who was appointed its president in January. As part of that process, several others were offered different positions within the organization - some at a lesser rate of pay.

Walt Disney Imagineering is currently working on the “Star Wars” land project at Disneyland, which could open in 2018 or 2019, and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” overlay for the Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure, which will open in 2017.

The company is also working on several projects at Walt Disney World, including “Star Wars” land, a Toy Story land, both at Disney Hollywood Studios, and a land based on the movie “Avatar” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Reporter Mark Eades worked for Walt Disney Imagineering from 1982 to 1993.

Makes sense and it was kind of expected. Some people on Twitter were making it seem as if there was some sort of revolution within Imagineering that involved censorship, unconformity and all kinds of crazy stuff. Though you never know. Perhaps Imagineering went on strike after the ToT announcement
