Hi Everyone,
I am going to a dear friend's Law School Graduation on Saturday. We are then going out to dinner. My friend is in her 50s so cash is not appropriate. Also, she has most of what she wants. (She is married and also had a successful career prior to going to Law School.) Any Ideas???

PS I would not like to spend more then $150 or so.

THanks for the help.

Jean

A cool business card holder, or a really nice legal pad holder would be good. She probably already has a briefcase, but a smaller briefcase she can carry on days she doesn't have a lot of files to take around would be nice too. I wished I had a different briefcase, on occasion. (I'm a lawyer too).

I am a lawyer and one of the most unique gifts I got was an audio series(it was on tape in the late 1990's) I am sure it is on CD now. It was called " May it please the court" and it was audio recordings of the most famous cases that have been argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. I.E. Roe v. Wade, Brown vs. Board of Education etc. Very cool, appropriate and unique gift. I was 27 at the time, but is appropriate for anyone graduating law school. I assume you can find it on amazon or some similiar product. Just noticed it you needed it this weekend, someone like BOrder's Barnes and Noble or Law school book store might have it.

When I graduated law school, I got a few legal themed gifts I liked - a jewish painting saying justice justice shall ye pursue, a pen from tiffany's with the scales of justice, not so sure if they make a keyring like that still, a crystal box from tiffany's for my desk, etc. A business card case is nice, too (like a nice leather one).

I agree with Perdiatamarie that you can't go wrong with a nice pen. With the $150 budget, you can get something quite nice. Waterman or a similar top brand is the way to go.

I don't recall getting any gifts upon my law school graduation.

How about a day at the Spa to use for a breather while she studies for the Bar or after she has taken it?

I graduate law school on Saturday too! I haven't really recieved many gifts either besides cash. I think all the above suggestions are good. I got Dbf (also gradauting) a leather padfolio from Things Remembered with his name followed by J.D. and he loves using that. Lol, personally I just want to pass the bar and get a job...and then go on a vacation (well the vacation would be right after the bar).

I got my DH (then BF) a nice leather briefcase bag at Orvis that he had loved. We got his initials on it and he still uses it now - 11 or 12 years later. He wants a new brief box - it's like a briefcase but it has hard sides and locks on the top. He uses that for his files EVERY day - would be a great gift if you can find one.

Another idea - one of the most valuable things for the summer post law school grad. During the time I was preparing for the bar, perhaps my only indulgence that summer was a gym membership. If you know of gym nearby and you can afford to get the grad a few months membership to get them through the bar prep - it was a great stress buster. I was also in the best shape of my life!!!

Other than that, I am a pen snob - but I find them to be a very personal choice. I can't even pick them for my husband.

Pad folios are very useful and a nice one can last forever (presuming you don't leave it on top of your car when you pull out of the garage one day):headache:

WOW so many wonderful ideas. I am going to look into everything today and see what I can come up with. I can also give her the gift next week if I can not execute one of these ideas today or tomorrow.

I love the idea of the cds, I will have to get us both a set, what fun.

Thanks for all the help

Jean

There is a catalog for legal gifts. Their website is www.forcounsel.com. As for me, some of my favorites were the non-legal things like spa certificates, a piece of jewelry, an expensive bottle of champagne or a nice restaurant certificate etc. It really just depends on what she likes. Looking around my office, the things that many years later are still there and that I can remember who bought them for me are a pretty clock; marble legal bookends; and an art glass paperweight. As for pens, I lose them and am perfectly happy with the disposables that come 10 in a package. I find them more comfortable to write with anyway. I know I got a couple of really nice pens for law school graduation, but they didn't last long before I lost them.

How about a really nice laptop bag...they have some great ones for women!

My favorite gift I got from my law school graduation was a blind justice statue for my office.

That would be good. I was thinking I'd like some bookends like that.

One of my favorite things I got for law school grad was a spa day. It was so nice to use right after the bar exam was over. If there is something totally "not" legal, but that you know is special to her, that is always good, too. A GF got me a pooh bear stuff to lounge in "while I studied for the bar", just as an example.
I like the ideas of the leather portfolio and special pens, too. I got one when I graduated undergrad and was so pleased to have it when I interviewed.

i agree with the following ideas: spa or gym membership...studying for the bar was very stressful so the gym and starbucks was really the only thing that got me through it. i could have really used a day at the spa too.
