I was trying to watch Law & Order while DD was trying to watch The Batchelor.

I saw everything up to a certain point: girl dead, waitress ID'd picture, cab connection figured out, then they visited the weird guy who held up a knife and asked if they wanted cheese.

From then on, I saw only a few seconds here and there.

Was the guy with the knife and cheese the killer?
How many had he killed?
Who was the blond lady?
Why was the curly-haired defense lawyer on trial?
Did they have a trial for the killer?

TIA.

Yes, the cheese and knife guy was the killer - actually a serial killer
His first defense attorney from the PD office stepped down because she was afraid of him.
His new attorney from legal aid was the dark haired guy on trial.
The serial killer told him where the other bodies were, about 15 young girls who had disappeared over the years, and the idiot went to see them. He then refused to tell the DA's office where they were or even which missing girls' bodies were there.
So he was charged and tried ( I can't remember the charge) but he refused to tell them because it would be unfair to his client.
The blond woman was one of the missing girls' mothers and she was begging him to tell her whether one of the bodies was her daughter.
Even after his client- the crazy serial killer was sentenced to death for the two murders they could try him on, the defense attorney still refused to tell where the bodies were or even identify who they were. So as you saw he was convicted and went to prison on his principles.

I hope I answered most of your questions.

Ther serial killer was a real wacko and got his kicks (besides killing young girls and women) out of putting the lawyers in all kinds of binds.

The defense lawyer (Have seen him somewhere before..anybody remember?) was completely right in his stance legally. It was the morality of his stance that was the issue. I would imagine if the show was based on a real one, the lawyer would have gotten off on appeal where a jury doesn't play in as much. Interesting how the law works at times and L&O really does a great job in such a short time.

It was one of there more instense shows that's for sure!

The charges against the legal aide attornery were some sort of consipiracy to aid and abbet numerous murders - on the grounds that he unlocked the "location" of the bodies and then relocked when he was finished looking.

wasn't he one of the guys on Spin City?

I believe you are right. He played a dimwitted sidekick to Fox. Never seen him play a dramaic roll before. He did a good job.

Excellent summations everyone.

And I thought he did a great job as the legal aide attorney.

In thinking about it though, wouldn't he and his lawyer requested the trial to be before the judge? In which case I don't think the prosecution would have won. I was amazed at the verdict. I thought it was a weak case to begin with (but then again I'm not a lawyer either).

a lawyer weighing in here -- though I'm not a criminal attorney and it's been a good number of years since I studied criminal law.

the Canon of Ethics -- an interesting document. what you tell your lawyer is sacrosanct. but if a lawyer actually does something with the evidence it's debatable as to whether that comes into the scope of the attorney-client privilege.

and yes, given the circumstances, I would have recommended the defenant waive his right ot a jury and agree to a bench trial. a judge will be mroe focused on law and less on sympathy.
