i was told that a launch of the shuttle is going up when i am visiting orlando, how far is it to the site and is it worth the trip.i don't impress too easily neither does the wife so a view of what looks like a lighted match going up won't do it for us,but on the other hand if you are reasonably close say burn't eyebrows close;) we would consider it.on a serious note unless your a rocket freak is it worth the trip

One word of warning before you start planning too much - the launch time is 6:43 am so be prepared for an early start if you want to watch.

We got tickets for the last launch in December but it was cancelled with only 5 mins to go, we could not be bothered going back to KSC on the Saturday so just watched it from our hotel and it was an impressive sight. It was a night time launch and the whole sky lit up.

There is a pier near the KSC that you can go view for free, think it about 6 miles from the launch pad. :)

If you are not Space enthusiasts, you can go for the "lighted match" view from Orlando instead of being stuck in traffic for ages on the way to KSC (and back again)!;) Since the launch is an early morning one, this might be the best option rather than getting up at dark o'clock (which I personally detest ) for the drive to the Space Coast.

We've been to a launch, and although I loved it, you aren't all that close. The atmosphere was electric though - absolutely buzzing!:goodvibes

When we got back to the hotel sometime about 8.30pm that night, the servers in the hotel restaurant told us they watched from the hotel's car park and asked why we'd bothered to waste a vacation day and spending $$$.:lmao:

We'll be in Vero beach then, and I've been looking into going to KSC for the launch, but have decided against it as they close the gates 2 hours before launch, i.e 4:43 am

We may go somewhere nearby, or may just watch from the resort. I've seen two launches from WDW - one from our resort and one from Magic Kingdom - both very impressive, even from that distance :)

The traffic getting back to Orlando from KSC was a nightmare, it took us 4 1/2 hours! It was a really long day that's why we could not be bothered going to do it again 2 days later when the launch was rescheduled!

One year we were doing the Keys to The Kingdom tour and we all stopped when the shuttle took off, fantastic sight the flames roaring into the sky right over (from our position in the back area of MK) the top of Cindys Castle
Worth doing it that way really :-)

One year (staying in Daytona Beach) I watched the launch on TV, then went outside to see the vapour trails as it went up.
