Where would I have to worry about latex in disney?? Do they use latex gloves to cook at the restaurants?

I don't know about the restaurants, but my son was given a balloon years ago as we boarded the ME and someone on the bus came up and asked us to make sure we held onto it as they were very allergic. We quickly took the balloon off the bus and gave it back. Did not want to worry about it the whole bus ride!

I'm not worried about the balloons as she doesn't react to them just worried about it coming in contact with her food

Balloons would be my worry. I would mention the latex allergy at any dining locations and verify that non-latex are being used to handle the food. Also be aware of banana cross contamination.

Restaurants no longer use latex gloves or that's what we were told. However the dishwashers do. They always bring out ds new unused utinsels. My ds is highly sensitive to foam so we watch the lapbars for any tears in the outer coating. I was worried about the ball you pull on Toy Story Mania but it didn't bother him. Then there are the balloons - even if you don't buy them the wind blows them around when tied to strollers, etc.

Do you let the restaurants know of the allergy is that how they bring you different silverware?? We will be doing the Toy Story ride for the first time this year thanks to fast pass+ what's the ball you mention?

The Mickey Mouse balloons are inside a plastic balloon. I have one daughter on latex precaution and one who has an anaphylaxis reaction to latex and bananas and we have never had a problem at Disney. We live 8 miles from Disney 6 months of the year so it's not like we only go one week a year.

Many people allergic to Latex are cross reactive to bananas and eventually become allergic to bananas themselves.

I have a severe latex allergy, but did fine in DW for 12 days. I have a bunch of other allergies, so latex was one of many the chefs were warned of. I didn't see any latex gloves in use, and because the balloons were outside, I didn't have a problem with them, either. If they had been in the shops in large numbers, I might have.

Banana cross contamination?

If you look up latex-banana allergy, this shows up:

around half of all people with latex allergy have allergic reactions when eating particular foods including avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwifruit, passionfruit, plum, strawberry and tomato. This is because some of the proteins in latex that cause latex allergy are also present in these fruits. Common symptoms include tingling in the mouth, stuffy nose, itchy eyes and wheezing.

We were warned of banana and avacado. The only fruit my ds will eat is banana (sensory issue w/ very limited food choices). He is 12 now but the allergy first appeared at 4 and I still peel his bananas for him - I was told the peel is the problem.

I have 2 children with spina bifida, the oldest one is 24 and the youngest is 16. When my oldest was a baby she would throw up baby food bananas the few times she had them and then at 7 months developed her allergy to latex. My youngest has never had bananas or be around latex so I don't know if she has an allergy or not.

Sometime in the early 90's 60 minutes ran a story on bananas and latex with a dentist that was allergic to latex that went to visit her niece in the hospital. While she was there she ate a banana and had a latex reaction. The combination of the two left her severely brain damaged.

Many restaurants at Disney are not owned by Disney and use latex gloves. It's been a long time since we've eaten at T-rex, but at that time they used latex gloves. They ended up using bare hands to make his food.

He cannot ride Spaceship Earth. The few times he has ridden, he came off very wheezy. We were told there is some type of rubber core in the building of the structure. Not sure if it's latex or butyl rubber as he is allergic to both.

I, too, have a latex allergy, and was wondering if anyone with this allergy has had issues with the new magicbands. I haven't been able to get a hard and fast answer about what these are actually made of...and it makes me incredibly leery about how they look...If they are in fact a form of latex or rubber, the longer I wear it, the worse my reaction to it would be...And I really don't want to end up in the hospital over my Disney vacation :) Thanks for any info! :cool1:

From the Disney Parks boards, under the Mom's Panel board:

QUESTION: Are the Magic Bands made of Latex? My wife has a latex allergy and would have a real problem having to wear it.

ANSWER: Mickey Mouse has thought of everything. The new MagicBands are made of a non-latex hypoallergenic material. How great is that! Your wife should have no problem with the spiffy new MagicBands. Have fun!
