Anyone else hear today's latest terrorist alert for possible plane hi-jackings by Sept or summers end? :(
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/07/29/airline.warning/index.html

I haven't let the others bother me....but this one is making me sick.

Army DH is away right now...so no one to talk me thru this. And of course, he'll be flying again around that time. In the areas they talked about.

And I was doing so good with all this crap too. :(

I have not heard about this, but if they're warning us about possible hi-jackings I'm sure security at the airports will be much tighter. This could also be a rumor will the second anniversary of Sept. 11th coming up, I'm sure people are a bit more on edge.
I know it's hard not to worry, especially will your DH being in the Army and away. Just try to keep yourself busy when you feel anxious about this, hopefully that will help:D

if those terrorists think they are going to get through what is sure to be very stringent screening, and if they do and try to do anything on the planes... I highly doubt that anyone would just sit back and take it...

I think they are just trying ot terrorize us with the threat of terror and I'm not going to fall for it.

I'll try my best to explain it the way the news explained it well. I'm not seeing this covered in the news link I gave.

There is a loop hole in the security system. A terrorist could board a plane in Madrid, Spain as an example.....that would stop in Miami to either re-fuel or change planes before continuing onto South America as an example. The terrorist is NOT required to get a Visa to enter the US, because the plane is just stopping here. Here's the part I won't explain well. Because there's no Visa....they aren't able to track the names & prevent the terrorist from entering. They suspect the terrorist may hi-jack the plane once refueled & fly it into a US building. East coast is one of the areas. They suspect common carry on items would be used as the weapons.......cameras....... ???? Again, teams of 5 men......

They have pieced this together from info received from captives....and other places. I don't do a good job of retelling the details. I wish I could find a better link. They had a term for the hole in the system where the visa wasn't required. arrggh

well if you put it that way that is very scary!! I didnt even think about that! :(

I think the key thing to point out in this article is:

The one-page warning, sent to U.S. airlines and others Saturday, contains words of warning and skepticism, saying some of the intelligence the government has received raises "questions about the viability of the plot."

Homeland Security sources said the credibility of the information is still being evaluated. One government official termed it "dubious."

Honestly, I'm not worried at all about it. I would not hesitate to fly because of this. :)

Thanks for bringing me back to civilian reality a little bit. Being military.... you just never seem to be able to get away from it - entirely.

Thanks.... I'll try to remember that some of it might not be true. I hope. :(

I know it must be scary for you. Try not to worry. {{{{Hugs}}}}If crazed people weilding cameras or other common items, get on your DH's flight, he and his US Army friends will kick some butt. ;) They ain't ascared of no terrorists. ;)

I am quoting myself from another thread:
I understand how you feel. It took my family months to convince me to go back on a plane. I was never afraid to fly, I have been all over the world, my oldest DD was born in Okinawa, Japan. Then there was this one event, a man got on a plane and tried to light his shoe on fire, he had a bomb (sorry, does someone have this story? I avoided the news alot when DS went into the service) and the passengers on the plane STOPPED him. Some very large men and a woman.
My point is, when I go, we are:
1 ex-82nd Airbourne Army, 6' 2" 200lbs
1 6'3" 300 lb man, bar bouncer
1 Angry mom who will fight to the death to protect her babies
and that is just in our party..
Airport security is tight, some flights have air marshals and we are Americans who will not be taken down again. They caught us off guard ONCE. I am willing to "bet the rent" that on any flight there are other Americans who will fight for you, I will. Always remember. we are the home of the free, because of the brave. Do not live in fear, but be aware.
I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free
And I wont forget the men to died who gave that right to me
And I'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today........

I've got your back, Lets Roll..........

SplshMtn99~ Trust me, we Americans ARE fighting back. They hurt us bad with the loss of innocents on 9/11. They hurt us, made us cry and mourn, but most importantly, the UNITED us. The United States of America is an ugly beast when made angry.
Todd Beamer inspired us. I believe most Americans feel the same way.
We are now aware of the evils of the world. We weren't 2 years ago.
Don't mess with the U.S.

Honestly, I'm not worried at all about it. I would not hesitate to fly because of this.

Thanks, Michelle - you'll never know how much I needed to hear some calming words right now! I heard about this latest terrorist thread this morning - about 4 hours AFTER I put my 15 yr. old DS on a flight to Colorado. He's a Boy Scout headed for the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico - and I won't see himfor 15 long days. Of course my adrenaline is pretty high right now.....

Our entire family got stuck in Vail, Colorado during 9-11 two years ago. We ended up driving home because our flight kept getting bumped back - last count if would have been around 6 days for us to finally fly back and my teens couldn't miss any more school.

I'm flying to New Orleans next Thursday and to the Bahamas on the 23rd. Both are direct flights, both are leaving from New York City.

There is more security now with the threat of attacks. I flew on the one year anniversary of 9/11. My entire family got searched, including my 10 year old sister (I'm sure she must've looked very threatening! ;) )

I heard this report as I was (literally) booking my family's flight to WDW in September. Am I nervous? Yep. Am I still going? YOU BET! Am I also swearing off my usual news junkie ways? Yes. I'm sure my 13 year old will hear something about this, but I will shield them from it as much as possible.
