About 2 hours ago my dog (male, 15, golden lab) started having some weird attack. His eyes started twitching and moving everywhere and he was extremely nauseated. Every time he'd try to stand up his legs would collapse or if he'd take a step he'd usually run into a wall.

Anyway, we just took him to the emergency pet hospital and they're holding him overnight. They'll do some test but the doc said based on what she saw it looks like Vestibular Disease. She said they usually don't know the cause for it and it just strikes with no warnings with similar effects like a stroke. If it's just a peripheral vestibular problem, they said they dog can usually get over it and recover in about 3 weeks. But if its central vestibular disease, the cause could be something more serious like a brain tumor.

If anyone has experienced this I would like to hear your story. I'm currently researching all I can on the net.

Please shower some pixie dust to my puppy. I've had the dog since I was 8 years old (23 now) and I can't bear the thought of.... well, anything.

Thanks for listening.

I wish I knew something, but all I can offer is a {{{HUG}}} and PD coming your way :)

Hugs, Disneymoon, I hope it is nothing serious!

I'm so sorry about your doggie, Disneymoon04. Sending some pd and {{{HUGS}}} and good thoughts for your fur-baby. I know how much you love the guy.

That sounds familiar. We had something similiar happen with our toy poodle last year. We called the vet and what we described made him think that he had a seizure of some kind. We watched him pretty closely but we have never seen another one. The vet told us that sometimes they can have just one and then never have another one. He seemed a little strange for a few days but after a while he was back to normal.

{{hugs}} I know how hard it can be when we are worried about our furbabies.

I'm sorry. {{{hugs}}}
I don't know anything about that either. :(

{{hugs Bobbi}} I don't have any experience with that disease. I hope your doggey is ok.

Sorry I don't know anything about Vestibular Disease. I just want to send you my good wishes and loads od PD. I Hope that your puppy is up and running soon. We have 2 labs and I know how I would be feeling in your position.

My best wishes for a good outcome (sounds like it will be) for your buddy there, Dmoon. A big {hug} for you, and a little, gentle one for him {hug}

This happened with my sister's cat. It occurred off and on for about a year, but the cat has been fine ever since. Very weird. I hope everything turns out okay for your beloved pup. It's so hard to think of losing them, isn't it? Let us know how things are going. Good luck and pixie dust are coming your way!

Don't know anything about that one, but I do have some pet-PD to spare. *HUGS*

I just got here after being sick all day, but I said a prayer for your fur baby. (((hugs)))

Sending PD and hugs.

Hope everything is ok with you and your doggy.

{{{{{Hugs}}}}}

Thanks everyone... you really just don't know how much it means to me.

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, my mind has just been preoccupied.

The emergency vet is funded by the county, so they're only open during the night, once other vets open they close. So before they closed at 8 am we had to pick him up and then transfer him to our normal vet. They did some tests, and they can't find anything that shows it being caused by something in the brain like a tumor so that's good news. Medical science still doesn't know the exact cause for this (tumors and infections, can cause it, but usually it's for no appearant reason). The vet is keeping him until the eye twitiching (I think it's called nystagmus?) stops and he can actually stand on his own for a few moments. The doc said that could be a day to a few weeks. Luckily it's nothing fatal, but I realize this is just one bump on a long road ahead. He's 15 which is pretty much ancient in dog years.

Anyway, sorry for rambling, and for those of you with elderly dogs you may want to check out these links:

It's got a lot of great information about Vestibular Disease which is EXTREMELY common in old dogs, and I'd much rather some of you have an idea of what's happening to your dog cause it scared the heck out of me because the symptoms are so similar to seizures and a stroke.

Thanks again, everyone. :)

I wish you all the best with your doggie. And thank you for the links. My dog is getting up there in age. :(

Believe it or not, I had this exact thing in 1986...I woke up from a nap and if I opened my eyes the world was spinning and I would vomit. I was in the hospital for 8 days and was on bedrest the whole time. No diagnosis was ever made and I still have some problems to this day. My personal feeling is it was a virus that attacked the vestibular system. My nystagmus was so severe they were thinking tumor, encephalitis or multiple sclerosis. So hug your dog and tell him he is in good company. :) Hope he feels better soon!

Aww, I'm so glad you're doggie's ok now...best wishes for his health in the future! :)
(and give him a hug for me!)
