Due to the recent events, my wife would rather drive than fly to Florida. What are the "typical" conditions from Northern Indiana to Florida During Late December? I doing realize that freak snow storms can occur, but what is typical--esp. Kentucky, Tenn. & GA?

Hi laz,

We have driven from frozen MN to FL for many a Christmases. MIL lives there. Anyways, yes there can be storms along the way. Most are not big deal for northerns. We hig a big one in ILL one year. Snowed 6" the night we stopped in Bloomington, ILL. My husband left the snow on the roof to see how long for it to melt off. We scared people who were traveling north when they saw the snow on the roof in a Kentucky rest stop. Mostly we try to watch the weather channel alot! They only area you really neeed to be the most concerned in the pass throught the mountains north of Chattanooga, TN. They can get wicked ice storms there and the road get very icy. We have lucked out. Other then the one storm in Bloomington, we had great traveling weather. Also most Christmases, FL weather in the mid 80's.

Have fun

Most of our worst winter weather in Tennessee comes from mid January through late February. While possible, it is rare for Tennessee to have a major winter storm in December (although we had our worst ice storm on Christmas Eve a few years ago). Light snows are sometimes possible, but nothing compared to what you must see all the time up north. When snow or ice does fall, it rarely stays around for more than a few days, and once you are south of Chattanooga, you are almost certainly in the clear. In other words, unless you have incredibly bad luck, travel conditions will not be a problem in Tennessee.

As I recall, it was snowing flurries when we left home for WDW last December 28th, but tapered off 50 or more miles north of Chattanooga. Even this was unusual.
