...so, why didn't they just do that with my brother's toe way back when??!?!?!

My thoughts exactly! If it were me I would have wanted them to take the toe when it was just at the point of being "just the toe." (Not that losing a toe is insignificant.) I would have wanted to have it taken to avoid the chance of the infection spreading and me losing more than the toe! I just don't understand doctors!
