I usually like this show a lot and enjoy that the recipients of the makeovers are worthy of having something so wonderful done for them.
The family on last night's show was chosen because an SUV had crashed into their house. Not a pleasant thing to have happen, I know, but insurance would cover rebuilding that one part of the house.
Maybe I missed something about what else made this family so special and deserving of such a major makeover.
The family was a mother and father with their daughter and boyfriend, and their new baby, living there.
I didn't like that the show actually bought an engagement ring for the young couple...a $12,000 ring!
The show has done wonderful things for some truly deserving families, but this show seemed like a big waste of money to me.
Just my honest opinion, of course.
;)

Totally agree with you. A $12,000 engagement ring? Puh-lease! If I was the daughter and still living at home with BF and baby, i'd rather have the money to save towards my own home!

wha-wha-what?

$12k ring

who spends that kind of money on a piece of jewelry?

that could buy so much more, that would be put to good use, in life!

who wants to bet they hocked it?

I agree, homeowner's insurace should have covered the damage. That ring was WAY over the top!

I totally agree with what everyone has said so far. The family didn't appear to be particularly needy, and insurance certainly would have covered the damage, even for the armoire. The accident was to have happened six weeks prior to that taping, yet nothing seemed to have been cleaned up during all that time? I found that a tad bit unbelievable. And, gee whiz, $12,000 for the engagement ring!?!? Crazy! I'm glad my dh and I weren't the only ones who questioned this last night.

I thought it was just ME! I usually love this show but didn't find the need in this group. Some of the other stories had me in TEARS!

I had thought of writing in for my aunt and last night's show convinced me to do so. She is so much more deserving than they were!

I missed the very beginning and thought the accident must have happened the day before they showed up to do the show!
The gaping hole wasn't even covered up and the whole room was in a shambles. Strange.
It was wasteful to put those poles in the ground too, the ones that rose up out of the ground to stop another SUV from crashing into the house!
I hope the show's better next week. (It's on at 9:00 instead of 8:00).

I know many people deserve extreme makeovers and the ring was ridiculous.

But, I'm tired of being squished in the middle. I wouldn't even consider us middle, I would say lower middle. Just maybe, these people were "middle people" and they didn't have insurance, or the car that crashed in their home didn't have insurance. Don't be so fast to judge, us sandwich people need help once in awhile too.

I have no idea if this is the case, but perhaps they didn't clean up because the insurance companies were still fighting it out and they needed to leave the damage "as is". Or maybe they had a lawyer telling them to leave it. I know when we got hit, I didn't do anything to our car until the dameage had been inspected, I didn't want to minimize the damege and risk the coverage being less. Just a thought.

I didn't see it, but they don't sound like they would qualify for the show. Odd. Maybe they were low on applicants? Hard to believe, but guess it could happen.

I Tivo'd it last night as I watched Trading spaces inside out (yawn)

I'll check out Extreme Home makeover tonight...usually they ALL make me cry.

I believe in the opening they stated that the mom was a teacher who was popular with her students. I think they featured her class in one of the segments for the show.

I was thinking the same thing.....why in the world is the daughter still living at home w/ her fiance? Why would they give her a ring when they could use the money to get out on their own? I guess there must be something we don't know...just seems strange. As someone who works for an insurance company...someone is responsible for the damages. Did the home owners and the drunk driver not have insurance??? One of them had to have had insurance. Maybe not..who knows....it's a mystery...... They did do a good job rebuilding the house tho!

I'm not sure what you mean about being squished in the middle, but I didn't dislike the show because the people weren't poor enough to deserve the makeover.
I am not judging these people, I am questioning the show's judgement in determining that this family was worthy of a makeover.
There have been families on the show who seemed to be better off financially than this family, but the other families had gone through great heartships and sorrows. Or did good works for their neighborhood, like the black woman who sacrificed so much to help the people in her city.
I didn't realize that some "middle people" didn't have homeowner's insurance,
I thought everyone with a mortgage had to have it.
I think we might be "middle people" now, but we had homeowner's insurance even when we were "lower people".

My Florida room sunk a few years ago.
It wasn't covered by homeowner's insurance.
It was a huge nightmare, and a great financial burden, rebuilding that part of our home.
Just one of the joys of homeownership.
I didn't deserve an extreme makeover on my house and I don't think these people did either.

The point is, I like this show because it helps people who really need SOMETHING to help turn their lives around, it's more about rekindling a spark and restoring the faith than it is about money.

And yes, the ring was the clencher! Such an extravagant waste of money!

JMHO

;)

I am so glad I am not the only one who thought that choosing this family was weird! I saw this show the first time it aired and all I thought was "what about the insurance: home owners & the driver?" You'd think the show would have mentioned if they had neither available.

And the ring for the mooching kids was incredibly stupid! All that money?! If those kids really wanted to be married, they'd walk down to city hall for heaven's sake. That $12k could have been better spent in many ways - or even not at all. I really got fed up with the show at that point.

I've loved all the other episodes though! Let's hope the new ones coming up are just as good as the others.

I'm glad to hear what you all thought because it was my first time watching that show last night and I did not see any reason to keep watching it. I will give it another try next week. I did feel the show was so materialistic, especially with the ring! I did think that maybe neither the driver or the homeowner's had insurance since everything was still in shambles after 6 weeks. Hope the next one is better.
