We wait listed about two months ago for HHI for the end of August (Labor Day Weekend), realizing that it was a long shot and after a particularly rough day at work today, I had the crazy idea to just head to WDW for the same time frame. I checked availability and discovered it would be better to move our plans up a few days (fewer points and less travel issues) so I booked two nights at SS and three nights at AKV-KD (savannah). Here's the catch - we're not going to the parks. After a quick conversation with my wife, we decided that it would be out of our budget (this was last minute after all) to do length of stay tickets for all of us (DW, DS, DD, DD, and me) so we have decided to just go and relax, enjoy the pool, Downtown Disney, perhaps tour our favorite resorts, and just enjoy "free" Disney.

Are we crazy?

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

We have done this and loved it! Especially staying at SSR and having DTD right across the lake with all the dining options. We go play mini golf, tour the resorts, ride the monorail, sleep in.

Our last trip was in June and we did parks but our very best day was the day we were at the pool at OKW.

Have fun!!

You are driving distance - a long drive, but its driveable. Why not?

For us, its 24-26 driving hours - two very long days there, and another two back, or $1600+ in airfare, there are no last minute WDW trips.

Me, it would be books - which is part of the reason we don't do it - for us, give the kids to Grandma and do a B&B weekend with books.

I had a resorts only trip this summer for 9 days with my daughter at the BWV's and we both loved it!

Have a great time:cool1:

We did that last year and had a wonderful time. We stayed at SSR for the 1st time and were right next to the Paddock pool, which was terrific. We really enjoyed taking the boat over to DTD and catching a movie, bowling, strolling around and eating! AK Kidani is a wonderful place to just chill out - lots to do and see. Have fun.

:thumbsup2 not crazy at all - VA to FL = very doable road trip - relax and enjoy great pools - multi levels of food choices - bus to winter land mini golf - evening movies - night sight animal lookouts - it will be a great time.

Thanks for all of the great feedback! We are really looking forward to this trip - 14 years as a DVC member and I have never done a trip on two weeks notice so that in itself has been an experience so far. We did have one change over the weekend and that is we'll be headed to the Studios for one day while we are there. DW couldn't quite bear the thought of being there while the "Frozen" summer was going on and not seeing it. It is good to know we are not the only ones who have tried a "resort only" trip (even with the change) and am anxious to see how it goes - really looking forward to just relaxing and enjoying two resorts that never really had time to enjoy.

Thanks!

We have done this several times. It's wonderful!

DH and I really enjoyed the Frozen sing along and are going to do it again, I think you'll be glad you decided to go to DHS. :thumbsup2

Last minute trips can be some of the most fun and pixiedust: filled. You can be more go with the flow, no set time table to meet, more relaxing, and see different sights that ever before.
Some suggetions that will cost you nothing:
Go over to DTD, take the river cruise over to POR and back.
Take a monorail tour of resorts CR, Poly, & GF.
Take in the music, dancing numbers of the groups at DTD and in front of the HoB.
Catch Hee-Haw Bob show at POR.
Movies by the pool/beach.
Play tennis at your resort.
Go for a nature walk between WL and FWC.
If you golf, take a putter and balls, go the pratice green at one of the courses, and create a family putting game.

You will have a great trip! DH and I did this over spring break and it was sooo great. (we did one EP day since it was flower and garden) We didn't come close to seeing all we had hoped so don't worry about running out of things to do! I am sure we will do it again sometime.

And as a side bonus I think that trip has forced me to see the benefit in slowing down during our "regular" trips and I think we all are appreciating that!

This is a great discussion. I'm trying to decide to go for a long weekend...arriving Sat afternoon and leaving Monday night. Go to the MNSSHP on Sunday night...no other parks. I found airfare for $225 and the party ticket is only $60. SS still have studios available, and I have extra points available. Hummmm. Need to decide soon it's only three weeks away!

We just planned last minute trip. Those 399/person Annual passes are still burning a hole in my pocket. We are taking the kids out of scholl
