Las Vegas to San Diego

I am wondering how long it takes to drive from Las Vegas to San Diego. We will be doing this thanksgiving week. I understand that traffic will be busy during thanksgiving (I am in Australia). We can leave Las Vegas on Tue, Wed or Thur. Which would be the better day for travelling? DH has suggested going via Palm Springs and staying there overnight as we have a 20 month old an almost 3 year old. Any suggestions??

It depends on traffic, how fast you drive, and how many stops you make. We can do it in just about 5 hours...but that's with just one or two short stops for gas/food, no traffic, and going at least 70 mph most of the time.

Since I'd anticipate that most traffic on Tuesday-Thursday would be heading *towards* Las Vegas rather than *away* from Las Vegas, I don't think you should have horrible traffic, especially if you leave Vegas by 8:00-9:00 in the morning. Traffic on Thanksgiving Day itself (Thursday) shouldn't be bad at all, since you won't be mixing in with regular commuters. Of the three, probably Wednesday has the potential to have the heaviest traffic heading towards San Diego, just because so many people will travel that day.

Very easy to do in one day. You might even have some time for some extra stops like the Worlds Largest Thermometer in Baker or the McDonalds built in a train in Barstow. You won't want to miss those !!
