We are interested in going to Vegas in early June. Having never been there before, we want to stay at a hotel on the strip. We need a room with two double or queen beds. I am overwhelmed on where to stay and how to get the best deal.

Can anyone offer any advice? DIS boarders have always been great with their travel tips!!

We tend to stay in mid-strip hotels because then I can walk to most of the other hotels to sight-see or eat. I always go to Expedia and look at the prices, then go to the hotels' individual websites and search there. Calling the hotel directly usually gets me cheaper prices. Some hotels have a place on the website to sign up for deals by email, if you don't mind putting your email address out there. I have a separate email I use for things like that. Also, if you think you will go back some day, sign up for Players Club cards and you will get deals that way. We almost always have two or three free nights at several of the hotels, and we are by no means big gamblers.
Also, be sure to check out reviews before booking. I use Tripadvisor. I have stayed some places with some
bad reviews and had a perfectly nice time, but if the reviews are consistently bad I won't take a chance.

I have stayed at almost every hotel on the Strip that is rated 3.5 stars or higher. The only one I haven't tried is Flamingo. I do not gamble so Players cards do nothing for me. I do sign up for website promotions and have gotten some great offers that way.

If you are flexible on your dates, you want to play around with them because if there are any conventions in town, the rates will be up. Moving your dates sometimes by a week or even a day can make a huge difference.

I never book any of the packages through expedia as I've found I can get my own airfare and room cheaper by booking separately. YMMV. However, Expedia (or similar websites) can show you the ratings of the resorts so that you can get a snapshot idea for comparisons.

The hotels are approximately 1/2 of a mile apart so if you look at a map, realize that the hotels are actually quite a bit apart from one another. So usually hotels on the ends are going to be less expensive (assuming same quality) than the ones mid-strip. I don't care if I'm mid-strip or not. I love to walk or a pass on the Deuce (bus that goes up/down the strip) is very cheap. I also don't mind doing split stays.

The cheapest rate I ever got was $15 for New York New York. I prefer to stay at the other end (Venetian is my favorite) but I always look at prices. If there isn't much difference, I book what I like but if I get a great rate, I stay wherever that is.

Just like Disney, everybody is going to have a different opinion on resorts. I personally dislike Paris, Mandalay Bay, Wynn, Luxor. I will not stay at Excalibur. I love Venetian, Cosmpolitan, Bellagio, Caesars. The rest fall in between.

I rarely gamble but love staying on the strip..Mandalay bay is beautiful and has an amazing pool..we like MGM because it has great monorail access. Avoid Luxor, Excalibur, imperial palace and flamingo. Just what I like...everyone varies. I like shows and good food..nice pool if summer or spring. I sign up for all the players clubs for the room deals. My friend got 2 free nights at the Wynn and never gambled. You can get email promo codes and specials by signing up. I gambled with my free credit and they let me keep the winnings.

If you are on any kind of a budget stay mid strip at the Flamingo, Harrahs or Ballys. You will find drinks nearby by on the cheap ($1 Michelobs and Margaritas at Casino Royale and $1.50 Coors Lt's which arent advertised. You will be right across the street from the fountains at the Bellagio. Just my suggestion.

Some thoughts:
  1. Vegas hotels get top $$$ on weekends and when big conventions are in town. You'll generally get dramatically lower rates Sunday-Thursday nights.
  2. Many hotels charge a resort fee. Make sure you include that when considering what property offers the best deal.
  3. Vegas is no longer marketing to famlies. Many hotels charge extra if you have more then 2 guests in the room, even if the guest is a child. Sometimes the charge applies even if the child is an infant.
  4. I'll agree with the PP. The best deals are frequently found at the Flamingo, Ballys and Harrahs. Good location. Venentian frequently offers good internet deals. Sign up for their email list.
  5. PP is lucky or mistaken. Hotels like Wynn generally only comp rooms to high rollers. Maybe guests who fit their profile as a potential high roller.

Sites like Expedia might offer a good deal if you're combining room and airfare.

The link offered by a PP to smartervegas is a great place to look. They aggregate many of the discounts being offered on the hotels websites.

We like staying off the strip (probably in the minority) but we love the Golden Nugget on Freemont Street. We take the bus to the strip or drive and use valet parking. If you aren't comfortable with playing table games like Craps and Blackjack there are so many places on Freemont Street that will teach you during the day and have very low buy ins. After I learned to play craps, I decided it was a lot more fun that slots, looks confusing but really isn't.

Like a PP stated, it is much cheaper to stay during the week than on the weekend.

I used to go to Vegas annually. We are cheap so we stayed at the old Sahara or the Tropicana.

The thing to realize as a first time visitor is that the Strip is like 7 miles long. That means if you are at Mandalay Bay or Circus Circus you are basically 3.5 miles away from the middle of the strip.

And in June it will be hot, so walking 3 miles is kinda difficult.

My best recommendation to you is to say in the middle, from the Bellagio/Bally's area up to the Venitian area. If you are in that middle section of the strip you will minimize walking.

I'd also splurge a little. Don't be too concerned about getting the best deal. Instead I'd try to get the best deal from Bellagio, Ceasar's Palace, Mirage, Venetian, Harrah's, Flamingo, or Bally's.

Bally's and Harrah's will probably be the cheapest of those resorts because they are the worst of that group. But any of those will give you a tremendous experience. You would have a much, much better vacation staying at the Mirage vs staying at Tropicana. Especially your first time. I believe Bellagio, Ceasar's, Mirage, or Flamingo are worth at least $50 more per night than hotels like excalibur, luxor, tropicana, etc. You will easily get $50 more per day value.

There is a Groupon right now for Treasure Island..also we use the monorails and trams a lot. Free tram (monorail) goes from Mandalay bay to Excalibur then walk just a bit to MGM and take the monorail..fee but fun and worth it. Just what we like...we rarely walk the strip itself for long ..

Oh and I am not mistaken I was there and stayed with them..Wynn said they like to do some comps based on your profile and not how much you gamble exactly..they were double income no kids at the time...and I singed up and got 100 of free play..won 40 and got to keep it. I have only had a free room as part of a spa promotion but I too have stayed free..you spent 199 at the spa and got a night free..299 for 2 nights..it was treasure island and we did a girls trip. We also got half price show tickets !!!

We were looking at Paris as that looks convenient and is in the same price ballpark as the others. We don't mind spending a little extra but right now we are at $954 for 4 nights in early June with 3 adults and 1 child - 2 queen beds. Was hoping to find a promo code to bring it down a bit.

That was my point. Hotels like Wynn (Bellagio...) comp based on your past play or if your profile suggests you'll be a roller.

Hotels like TI (formerly Treasure Island) offer attractive packages to "regular customers". It's another property for the OP to consider. I wouldn't put TI in the same category as Wynn, although hotels like TI will exceed the requirements of most of us.

How much time do you plan on spending in the hotel? Do you have other plans - show tickets, Grand Canyon tour, etc?

The location of Paris is perfect! The price seems high to me though.

We just got back from Vegas and stayed at Excalibur (south end of strip). It was a hefty walk to get mid-strip where all the action is, but the price was $0 - however we upgraded our room at the cost of $10/night (well worth it to get an extra 100sqft).

If you have Facebook, sign up for the myVEGAS game - you get free comps!

Our room at Excalibur was free, we got free buffets, and free Tournament of Kings tickets (DH and I both play, so we got 2 free nights, 2 free buffets, 2 free tickets - we only paid for DS).

Thank you for the info. We booked Paris at the best rate we could find at the time, but are always looking for ways to bring the price down. We will be going on a day trip to Hoover Dam and spending a night at the Grand Canyon after Vegas.

I never heard of the Facebook game myVegas. Where do you accrue comps for? Is it just Excalibur? Since this is new to me, I apologize if I have a lot of questions. Is there any downside to the game/app? Do the send you tons of emails or is it reasonable?

Thanks!
