Laptops & Safes

My 15.4" Toshiba laptop (14"WX10.5"H) fit fine in the safe at Pop. It has to stand on its side but there was room for other small items in the safe as well.

The safe in my room at BCV was like that - I could stand the computer on end and it fit in fine in it's padded sleeve. The new safes at CR are plenty big enough for laptop. I had my laptop, camera and handbag all in there at one time when I was hanging out at the pool.

Many of the safes are way too small though. The safes at WL are so small, I can hardly fit my camera and wallet in there, let alone anything else.

Notwithstanding the big red letters from a pp, I leave mine out on the table.

The Poly safes are nice and big. They are flat and in the closet. My husband's 17 laptop fit in there along with 3 ipods and and 3 Nintendo DS. So, obviously there was plenty of space. My husband says that even though it might be tall enough to fit two laptops, you had tilt the laptop up to get it through the opening so you probably couldn't angle a second one in. Hope this helps!.:thumbsup2

Bottom line, to some it is a matter of personal preference, to others neccesity due to data on the HD. We have left our laptops out in the open, we have locked them with cables, we have put them in drawers and closets. It all depends on the particuliar situation. Normaly we stay with DVC, so no-one should be in our room unless it is a specified day (no daily housekeeping), so we tend to leave stuff out. If we stay at a resort, we tend to be a little more security conscience. The only place I have ever had an issue in the room was at Hilton Head, and it was not a computer or electronics.

I don't think my laptop would fit in the safe at The Swan, it's not very big but kind of bulky. Maybe that's why!

I just left it in the room, in it's bag - didn't have any problems. Although to be honest it's not the worlds most desirable laptop, it's very old and I got it for free . So it's good for taking away in that respect!

NO, NOT THAT!!! ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!

Would you leave $1000 in cash sitting out unlocked, even in a WDW resort room? Then why leave a small, easily-concealable piece of electronics worth $1000 sitting out unlocked?

And even if you are foolish enough to believe that every single WDW employee is so high on pixie dust that none of them would EVER consider walking off with any of your posessions, you still must acknowledge the fact that they are human and imperfect - and they work quickly in those rooms with spray chemicals and vaccuum cleaners that pose a hazard to uncovered electronics. You might still get back to your room one night and find your laptop had taken a dive thanks to an errant vaccuum cleaner, or gotten spritzed with a spray cleaner.

Or stolen by one of the roving theives who walk around and take advantage of the housekeepers' common practice of leaving room doors proped open while they work next door.

Take my advice - LOCK UP YOUR LAPTOPS.

In resorts where mine doesn't fit in the safe, I lock it by weaving a steel cable lock through several of the tines of the wire shelf in teh vanity area. I also pile some stuff on top of it to make it less conspicuous to any would-be theives.

WillCAD,
Good advice. Housekeeping does leave the doors open.

WOW! Tell us how you REALLY feel!

 :rotfl:

I actually agree but have left it out, with stuff on and around it, with no problems whatsover.

The safe at WL was so small as to be completely useless for anything more than just our wallets.

I kept my laptop and cameras in my locked suitcases (and yes, I do put all the cords & stuff away too - I'm really anal about keeping things together when we travel because I'm pretty scattered and worry about losing things). I know a cable lock would be more secure, but haven't bought one yet and since I still have the issue of my cameras, one of which cost considerably more than my cheapie laptop, I just use the lock on my pre-9/11 clamshell style luggage.

There have been reports of laptops stolen from WDW rooms here on the DIS. It just seems so easy to buy the cable and secure the laptop. I guess if you don't care if it is stolen or the files and photos will be gone forever than leave it out.

Many insurance companies if a laptop is stolen require you to prove that you did something to prevent the theft.

Yes, and I have occasionally stood under trees during lightning storms, with no problems whatsoever. It's still a bad, bad, bad idea, and leaving expensive stuff unlocked in a hotel room, any hotel room, is also a bad idea. Well, it's not as dangerous as standing under a tree during a lightning storm, but still not a good thing to do at all.

I put mine back in the carrying bag and put it on the shelf in the closet with the luggage.

I usually wrap up the power cable but I leave it out and havent had a problem

Agreed!! Lock it up!!! Even if you may trust Mousekeeping, you never know if Mousekeeping may be in the bathroom cleaning or restocking towels and a passer-by sees an open door and a free laptop. It takes seconds. IMO, putting it in a locked suitcase will only take it out of immediate sight. Of course that can walk away, too....agreed less likely, but seriously...do you want all your precious downloaded photos and personal information walk out the door?

If it won't fit in the safe, the cable lock will make it much more difficult for someone to walk away with it.

Anywhooo...here's a post with pictures of the safe at Pop Century provided by GorshGoofy. He did a nice job at giving you a visual for size. Many have stated their laptop fits, but I know for a fact mine wouldn't for two reasons...the battery bumps out the back and adds another 1" to the width, and mine is a 17" monitor.

Keep in mind that Mousekeeping is not the only one with access to your room. Managers, maintenance, and other authorized employees will also be in and out of your room when you aren't there. So if you do leave something expensive out in view, there are several possible culprits out there. Also, don't overlook the fact that sometimes rooms get double assigned (it happened to me in December - fortunately the other family was in the room when I got there) so it could be someone not even employed by Disney.

When I take my laptop, I always make sure everything is put away when I'm leaving the room, and that it is secured in some way. Nothing is foolproof if someone is determined to steal it, but I make it as difficult as possible.
