We have a mixed bag, my DD has a Dell, my other DD has an Apple (will start art school this fall) and my son has a Toshiba (he hasn't used it yet, he'll use it at school).
No matter which you decide, GET THE ACCIDENTAL BREAKAGE WARRANTY!!!.
Now this will make what seems like an affordable laptop more expensive, but my older DD stepped on her laptop her first year in college, broke the LCD display, did not have the insurance and it cost $700 to replace the screen. Dumb move!!! I made my twins get the insurance. It will cost around $300 but it's worth it.
