DD21 needs a new one..not had great experience with Toshiba..any recommendations? Want XP on it as well and that seems to be getting harder all the time to find!:confused3

My brother has an HP and it has worked great for him. It came with Vista on it though. If you want XP you may have to order it online from a place like Dell where you get to "build" your own computer.

You aren't out of luck if you want a system with XP. If you buy a system that comes preloaded with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, you have automatic downgrade rights to switch to Windows XP without having to buy another license. I know that with some of the HP laptops we have purchased, HP has included a XP restore disk in addition to the Vista restore dvd. That way we are able to switch to easily switch to XP without losing any of the system drivers or HP utilities.
You have to watch out though if you go this route, as you do not have downgrade rights if you buy a system with Vista Home, which is loaded on many of the lower priced systems.

I bought a Dell laptop last December, on the recommendations from friends, one of the main reasons being the warranty that they have.
Our model is the inspiron 1720.
It has Vista on it, but I think you can get whichever op system you want.
They are also good, in that you can call them tell them what you want, and they will e-mail you a quote which gives you a breakdown of all of costs of the different components that you want on your system.
My brother in-law also gets laptops there for my nieces who are also in University., and has been pleased with the service.

Log on to TigerDirect.com - free delivery usually and they have the best prices by far!

I have an HP laptop and with Vista on it and I love it. So far its been a really good brand of a laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron I bought online in Feb. and requested XP on it as well. Love it, got it for a great price, and use it every day without a problem.

Thanks all for sharing your tips..

Not sure a Dell would 'fly' here as DD has had many probs with a Dell Desktop-but who knows!:confused3

She realllly wants a MAC but DH keeps vito-ing that!

Well my first reccomendation would be for a Toshiba as they have always been top notch for us then I would go the ACER route another brand that has always been great and never a problem. I had a Dell for about 2 months back in 2001 and it was the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned it felt like it was build by a toy company and parts actually kept falling off of it.

Oh dear--we have had 3 Toshiba's bite the dust pretty fast in a row! Really at a loss--who to try next!

I just got a new HP this past May, it came with Vista though. I haven't had a problem with it, yet (keeping my fingers crossed, no problems) My dh has a Dell that he bought directly through Dell with XP on it. I think that if you want XP, this might be the way to go.
