laptop won't be quiet.. please help

i have what sounds like dj's talking from my lap top, like e-news sounding stuff- updates on this and that.

it is very frustrating... i can't find what it is that is running so i can't get rid of it.
i can mute the speakers, which i do often, but when i am listening to something, like a song or movie on the internet, that voice pops in under it and stays even when i close the internet windows.

anyone have suggestions?

I say throw it on the ground and stomp on it! Mine makes this noise that sounds like a hamster running on it's metal wheel! Drives me nuts, can't turn down the speakers as it is the computer itself....Yep, throw it down and stomp on it!

Is there a ham radio operator somewhere nearby? A friend of mine used to pick up the neighborhood ham radio on her Wurlitzer organ speakers whenever she turned the power on to play.

Is it really low sounding? I used to have a (desktop) computer whose speakers picked up a radio station all by themselves. I never found out why or how.

thanks for the tips but its still there...sounds like ads. it started before i even opened the internet. i hate it. its so annoying.

By "open the internet" do you mean "start a browser"? Your internet connection is probably already started before you open a web browser. It sounds like you have a virus or malware. Check out this thread and see if some of the options help:

Assuming you have a windows based operating system, you can also try this:

I'm running xp SP3, and even with McAfee, this scan from microsoft is the only one that found the file containing a pesky trojan virus that I'd been battling for a week. Microsoft tried to fix it, and couldn't...but at least I knew where it was, so I could manually remove it.

Be aware it will take quite a while to run.

I think you have a trojan or virus. My daughter had that on her laptop. I would be sitting here and all of a sudden you could hear this radio station in my daughters room.

I wasn't able to connect to anti virus sites to try and find the pesky thing. Finally I just reformated and it solved the problem. I had an anti virus program on her computer but it hadn't been updated for awhile.

Yay! I downloaded that one myself after reading about it. I just found some cookies ... nothing too big.
