Laptop: Whats an internal battery?

Im getting a warning about my internal battery on my laptop. I had read that this is possibly the internal charger for the battery not the battery itself. So..before I buy a new battery, i want to make sure that this is the case. Is this the battery FOR the laptop, or an internal part?

It probably is your CMOS battery.

I appreciate the prompt reply. The symptoms listed for the cmos do not match my symptoms..Seems like the cmos is what helps your laptop remember the date and time when off.
My major symptom is that the battery wont hold a charge. I have like a half hour battery life at full charge. But, the message on startup is about the 'internal battery'..not sure whats up.Power bar says fully charged, but unplugged it only lasts like i said maybe a half an hour.

This wouldn't happen to be an HP laptop, would it? I had that happen on an old one. It turned out to be the battery, not the internal (clock) one was faulty on the whole MODEL. Everyone had to replace their battery.

Maybe go to eBay & see if you can get one for yours cheap?

ironically, its a compaq..so the guts are hp. The guy at BB told me the batteries only last about 2 years, so i suppose this one is due.

I'm on my second HP laptop. This one is definitely my last.

Is the battery or bottom of your laptop getting very hot? That was one of the symptoms of the battery overheating & loosing the charge or something like that.

The rechargeable battery/ies in a laptop, or any, last about two years, if used often and recharged often.
