What do you do with your laptop if the room is not ready or when you are switching resorts and having Disney move the luggage? I'm looking at flights for Ocotber that would arrive around 1 p.m., I'm not sure what to do with my laptop if the room is not ready. We are also thinking about adding a couple of days at the beginning of our trip so that we can stay at AKL then move to the WLV. We were planning on having Disney move our luggage but now I'm not so sure since I have a laptop. Could I leave my laptop at the front desk at WLV for security? Any suggestions?

You can check it with bell services. We checked out of OKW in the morning on our May trip, but our flight wasn't until 5:30pm. We loaded the luggage into the rental car, but I didn't want to leave the laptop in there since it was over 90 degrees that day. So I left it with bell services and we went to Magic Kingdom. When we were ready to go to the airport, I stopped back at OKW and picked it up.

If I'm reading the post correctly, the question is, will bell services watch it a little closer than a suitcase full of undies? I've gone past bell services before and seen a pile of luggage sitting outside. Presumabely from people checking in or from transfers from other resorts. What would prevent someone from picking up a laptop and walking off with it? If you tell Bell Services it's a laptop, will they watch it closer? I generally leave mine in my truck so it's under lock and key, but if you don't have a vehicle, that is out.

When I handed it to the bellman at OKW, he knew what it was and said he would put it inside right away (and he did, I watched him). I tipped him both leaving & picking up (ended up being the same guy both times). I would have left it in the car with the other luggage if it was cooler, but at 90+ I was afraid because I knew the car would be sitting in the sun in the parking lot for at least 4 or 5 hours.

Try the "Perloined Letter" approach. Put your laptop inside another larger bag. This will make it less of a theft target. If it looks like someone's clothes, why would someone steal it. I know there's a risk but....

We did this in April at the AllStars. Left laptop with Bell SErvices before checking into room. They have a secured area at BellServices whwere things are under lock and key, and you have to pick them up personally, not have delivered to room like baggage.

I would assume that if AllStars has this that the other resorts do too.

I just did what you described (today was my transfer day to BWV). I let the bellhops move my luggage but carried my laptop in the trunk of my car (no harm). I feel pretty comfortable that te bellhops would take good care of the laptop at your resort. I would behesitant to have them handle the laptop on a transfer because of the fact that more hands are involved and you may not exactly know the route your bags take from resort to resort.

BTW, I definitely recommend AKL for a couple of days. It is a beautiful resort (especially with a savannah view) and has one of the best pools on property (overlooks the savannah as well). You have to be a guest in order to use the pool as AKL is not included in our pool hopping priveleges. Also, the in room safes are large enough for most laptops.

Are the safes in the rooms at BWV and VWL big enough to fit an average sized laptop in when heading out to the parks? What have you guys found? How do you secure your notebooks when you're not in the room?

When we were there last, my laptop did not fit in the safe at OKW, so we kept it in the bag in our suitcase, locked the suitcase.

This time I'm bringing the "security cable" from work, a steel cable you put around something immovable, then lock onto the case of the laptop, so I can leave it set up rather than waiting through the painful Windows NT bootup proceedure (yes, if patience is a virtue, I'm far from virutous *grin*). I'm not really worried about it, but DH is concerned so this will make everyone happy. :)

The safes are very small, I used it to store extra credit cards (that I didn't want to carry), extra cash, and our airline tickets. Nothing large will fit (at least at the BWV)

I called the frontdesk at the Boardwalk to see if they had a safe that I could store my laptop when we go down this year. I realize that it is Disney but there are dishonest people anywhere. I don't want to leave it in the room when we go to the parks or out to eat. I was told that bell services has a locked cage area where they store things like that and that it wouldn't be a problem. I will definately tip well to insure my baby's safety!!!

We travel with hard-sited, lockable luggage, and just put the laptop in there (nestled in clothing). It travels well, and no one would know it was ever there.

While at the parks, or if we change a room, we've just put the laptop in the trunk of the car. Remember, the trunk of a car will not get anywhere near as hot as the inside. The trunk will usually get no worse than outside air temp, while the inside of the car, with all the windows creating a greenhouse effect, can get up to 140 degrees in a matter of minutes.

I felt the same way about my video camera last year and asked theb front desk about it. At BWV they actually have a secured room where they will be happy to store the item for you. Bell Service will check it for you and retrieve it.

just heads up for everyone-

if you do put your laptop or camera inside a suitcase- dont leave it there if you check the bag for a flight. Sure no one would have any idea looking at it from the outside, but some (if not all) luggage gets x-rayed security prior to loading on the plane.

Well - the inbreds who work for airport security for just over mimimum wage are KNOWN THIEVES. (At least in your major metropolitan areas). They watch the xray machines and 'misplace' the bags with electronics. They open them -lock or no lock- take the electronics and place your bag on a later plane.

The airlines are well aware but dont give a darn because they specifically exclude a long list of these type items- i thinks its- "cameras, video equipment, computers, and related equipment."

It's an even longer story- but due to a mistake packing we were robbed years back- one of our suitcases showed up, the second Hard sided LOCKED suitcase arrived a day late lock destroyed, without the expensive item. Everyone at the airline, the police, and even my insurance agent were well aware of the problem.

Good news is - if you ever are unfortunate to have this happen- apparently insurance companies are so ruthless they dont care about the exemption. Luckily I have State Farm for my homeowners and they were great- they paid for a replacement and then sued the airline to get the money back so i didnt have to even pay the deductible and my rate never went up.

Now that you mention it, when I checked my laptop at OKW the bellman did say something about putting it in "the cage".
