laptop recommendations?

I've been using my parents home computer while I've been in school the past year and a half but at the end of this spring semester I'll be transferring to a new school out of town. I'm going to need a laptop and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for one? I don't know much about what brands are good and which are bad. Opinions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

ETA: Cost is also a factor. I am a college student after all

A lot of schools have specific requirements as to which laptops they want their students using. They also offer some pretty good prices on them. Check with your school for their requirements.

Depends on what ya do. Macs are for graphics and portability. Dells are best for being a media center and powerhouse. Dells are like 15 pound rocks though. Sony, media and wide range of others. Very portable. Maybe a ThinkPad? Great for notes, and portability. Might not last 2-3 hour seminars though.

Normally I would say a Dell but I don't like where Microsoft is going with their licensing so I say a MacBook.

I have an hp and recieved a 15% discount on it for being a student. I have a 17 inch,paid about 2000 for it for everything I have on it, and it's like 8 pounds but doesn't feel it.

First off, look at school requirements. However, these requirements are generally just the basic components required in the computer, not the computer itself. And for most of them; you'll be able to find those components in any new computer

I LOVE my HP. My father also loves his. He got my computer at a much better price than what the school was offering for their Dell's, and it's got more to it than the school computers (bigger, better processor, etc). I've heard HP has some sort of student discount program, but I don't know the specifics; my dad took care of everything on his own.

Yes it does. HP's are much cheaper than dell's. When I was looking for laptops last semester, my mom talked to the IT tech at her work and he said dells could break easily if they are dropped a lot but I have took my HP everywhere, and it's just got a bit of the speaker cover paint chipping off from use.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I am not sure if the school has specific requirements for laptops. I didn't know schools did that The community college I've been at didn't have that so I guess it's different at a university.

I would really like one that's not super heavy or big, but at the same time I want to make sure it's durable and reliable. I've heard a lot of good things about the Dell notebooks but now I've heard that the Mac book's are better. I guess I just have to figure out which one gives me the most bang for my buck.
