Laptop Recommendation for High Schooler?

Thinking of getting freshman dd a laptop for Xmas. Don't want to spend a lot because it will be obsolete by college time. Also don't want a netbook or mini computer.

Any suggestions from any Disers?

PS..primary use is for school papers and surfing internet (we have wireless)

We have an asus netbook. We bought it because of the asus reputation for motherboards. They make laptops too, though.
