My laptop is not charging. It says it is plugged in, but not charging. Does this mean that the battery is bad? I hate to have to take it in. The last time I tried that, they wanted to charge me more than the laptop was worth.

I assume it operates normally when plugged in? So the AC adapter/charger is working then.
Looks like it's time for a new battery.

As the PP stated if it works plugged in the batter has probably gone bad. You can get a replacement from the manufacturer, ebay, or a third party vendor. I would recommend getting a generic (for example you don't need a Dell branded battery for your Dell laptop).

First though, I would remove the battery and clean the contacts. It could be as simple as that and that will be the cheapest option out there.

Yes, I did that when I finally got around to getting a can of compressed air  and blew air in every opening I could find. I couldn't believe how much dust was in my laptop. When I took off the battery, there was a whole bunch of LINT underneath.
