Lap top hand luggage

DD 1 has just bought me a lovely Cath Kidston bag for me to use as hand luggage however I wanted to take my 15inch lap top which won't fit in can I carry this separately or will it exceed the hand luggage Im flying with US Airways I don't really want to put it in my suitcase in case of damage. What do others do?

you should be ok with your hand luggage and one laptop bag. So basically its two items

Oddly, Virgin's policy is one item only, they specifically state on their website laptops must fit inside the hand baggage to be brought into the cabin, unless you're flying upper class, then an additional, thinner bag is permitted. Normally only the charter budget airlines specify that, seems a step back in customer service

Yup, and yet BA, their biggest rival, continue to allow a separate laptop bag and whatever you can fit in it as well as the laptop. That and getting away on time more often than Virgin!

And a 23kg hand baggage allowance with the only condition being keeping within the max dimensions and being able to hoist it into the overhead locker unassisted.

I understand why the OP is wanting to take a laptop separately, but I do want to point out the inconvenience of carrying more than one piece of luggage around with you. I have a wheeled cabin bag and put my laptop inside a skin in there and manage to squeeze my whole camera bag and all the gear as well as my handbag and odd things for on the flight. It is SO much easier to have ONE thing with you while you trail about the departure hall for a few hours.

It has taken me five trips to become this wise Yoda. But on Wednesday me and my wheeled cabin bag, with lap top and hand bag inside it, will be entering the Airport. May the force be with you

Virgin seem to have cracked their marketing - people will pay a fortune for a sub-standard service. They want almost three times what we're paying for our flights for our next trip (though admittedly this is direct - that said, for the £125 per person per hour we'll save, I'll take indirect any day!)

I'm not even from the UK, but I just saw the title of this post and had to say something so that you don't have to experience what we did on our honeymoon...

Whatever you do, DO NOT pack your laptop in your checked luggage. We packed ours nicely in surrounded by clothes and were sure it would be nice and protected in there. When we got home, it and the charger were both missing, along with all our photos from the last year, including the ones we'd just taken on the trip

Our luggage was locked up like Fort Knox with the TSA locks, and we suspected nothing when we picked up our luggage because it was still completely intact. Sadly, it was obviously an inside job - you just can't trust anyone these days.

So I encourage you please if you're going to take your laptop, make sure you have it on your person at all times!

The locks were probably never opened.
Actually, a lock's only useful to prevent the suitcase from opening accidentally when being handled (should I say abused) by the airport's staff.

The weakest point in a suitcase is the zipper. Most of them, especially the plastic ones, can be opened with a ball point pen, and then closed again without even touching or removing the lock. You could never tell the suitcase has been broken into, and the lock was never picked or opened.
I don't know if I'm allowed to post a video of such "break ins" but there are many to see if you choose the right keywords on youtube

So locks are just for show and to give you a false feeling of safety (apart from preventing the zippers to unzip by themselves ...)
But whatever you do, the very first packing rule when flying is to NEVER EVER put anything of value in checked luggage.

As much as I trust technology, I copy my trip photos off the camera onto the laptop, where it's then uploaded to a cloud service for secure storage... that way i've got a couple of copies!!!!!

Well that just means that i now get to go shopping for a new cabin bag
I was after one anyways and so this just means that i definatly need to go get one!
I already have a wheeled cabin bag but i want one that has a harder top and sides then mine as its a soft one! I also like to fit a blanket and full sized pillow into it plus magazines etc.

Thankgod Hubby travels lighter then me! and the boys will each have new cabin bags this yr so i wont need to put all their stuff in my bag

Make sure you check the weight - hard shell wheeled cases can be quite weighty (2-4kg) and Virgin sometimes do check the weight of your hand luggage. 6kg isn't a lot, especially with a laptop in there.
