We're driving to WDW for the first time in less than two weeks. I remember reading a tip somewhere about using a lap desk in the car. My kids (ages 8 and 6) are both still in booster seats that are in captain's chairs in the van. Does anyone have a suggestion about what kind of lap desk will work and especially about where I can buy a couple? Thanks!

Yes, both Target and Walmart carry them in the toy section. I am not sure if they would be big enough for your 8 year old though.

I actually made a lap desk out of foam core board bought at the dollar tree. I cut it down to the size I needed (just fit over the edges of ds car seat) and then glued strips of foam core around the edges so crayons and the like wouldn't roll off. You could probably be more creative and use something else like pipe cleaners around the edges if you want. Mine wasn't pretty, but it did the job (18hr drive each way). Just a thought, if you can't find something that will work. I've seen the Fisher Price soft travel tray (like the one here) mentioned a lot on car safety boards, because it is soft and light weight, and doesn't interfere with how the car seat works, but it seems kind of small to me (esp. for bigger kids). You don't want anything with hard edges or that is heavy because in a crash, it could become a projectile. That's why I like my little home-made one - it weighs practically nothing, AND it also takes up almost no space in an already cramped vehicle. :)

hth!

I found my sons lap board at Barnes and Noble. It was a little expensive but worth the cost. It has a plastic top and a bean bag bottom. He has used it for almost two years now and it really comes in handy on long car trips.

I found lap trays (with the fold-out legs) near the cash registers at Wal-Mart, $3.00. It had the "lip" around the edge and we just pulled out the legs until it straddled DD's legs in her booster seat. Also, got the bean-bag type at Dollar General. The bean-bag on the bottom with a plastic tray on top (sort of like the old-fashioned school lunch trays). There again it had the "lip" around the edge and even a recessed cup holder, $5.00.

I have also seen at the Christmas Tree Shoppes. Can't remember the price, but only a few bucks.
