Any Michigan Dis'ers know about this area? Mainly the good areas to buy a home, good schools etc. Just found out today that my sister is moving up there :sad1: Thanks for any help. I may bump this a few times til I get some responses. I know I have seen some MI Dis'ers out there!

Okemos, Holt and Mason are all nice bedroom communities with small-town atmosphere and good schools. I've had a house in Okemos for 13 years now and may be selling it soon, but it is rather small (only two bedrooms). Homes are more expensive here in Okemos relatively, but value keeps increasing. You can go further out of town like Leslie, MI and things get even cheaper. If you'd like any more specific info don't hesitate to ask!

The nicest town around Lansing is Naperville, Illinois.

Hey Squirlz! Thanks for the quick response! Do you know the names of some of the home builders in the area? I am not having much luck with google. My head is spinning. My sister has 4 kids, so a bigger house is in order. Thanks for your help :)

Hi, I live in the Lansing area. I'm sending you a PM.

Dewitt is a bit north of Lansing but still very close and a very nice community. Holt schools and Dewitt schools are real good. I think they're both Class A school, meaning large.
Okemos is a very nice place, too. Actually there's a lot of nice areas in and around Lansing. :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for your help :) I plan on visiting her a lot. Glad to hear it is such a nice place to live. :sunny:

MY DS lived in Okemos and loved it. He'd still be there but a job transfer moved him to K-zoo. Willimaston is also a very nice area!

Schools: There are some excellent districts here in mid-Michigan.
A place to start to review schools is on the State of Michigan website, Michigan School Report Cards. At the bottom of that window, click on Browse by county - the mid-Michigan area actually comprises 3 counties: Ingham, Eaton and Clinton. You will see a list of all schools and school districts.

Second website to check out for schools is the Standard and Poors website, School Matters, and here you can find community info/profiles as well as school district info.

Also, tell your sister to check out individual district's websites and look for their annual report - she will get more detailed information about that district, such as local celebrations, achievements, progress, goals, etc. She could also call and ask for the annual reports to be emailed or sent. Here is an example of Williamston's Annual Report

First districts that come to mind: Haslett, DeWitt, Okemos, Williamston, Grand Ledge, Holt, East Lansing, Mason

Builders: Start at the Greater Lansing Home Builders Association - there are some excellent custom home builders in the area, as well as some tract home type builders. I could recommend a few home builders from friends who have built homes, PM me if interested.

It is definitely a buyer's market here right now. She may want to consider buying instead of building. If she wants subdivision, rural, town - we've got it all here! Feel free to PM me and I'd be glad to speak more with your sister or meet her here for a tour of districts if she likes (sometimes it is nice to have a local chauffer when moving to a new area).
