so the head of the social work department is trying to push everyone (who has the time left) to minor in spanish. social workers are really in demand, but a spanish speaking social worker is really hard to find, so they're trying to get us to minor in it so we have an advantage in the job market.

has anyone minored in a language? i've looked it up in the catalog, and it looks like its an 18 hour minor (not counting spanish 1010, so its spanish 1010 + 18 hours up to the 4000 level, so i'll be taking 21 hours of spanish)

i think i'm going to do it.

has anyone else taken a language major or minor?

i'm majoring in french, it'd pretty demanding but it's worth it to me. i love it!
sometimes the work is REALLY hard, like the stuff we're getting into right now it's really specific, but if you do the classes and manage to be able to speak the language in conversation all the minute details don't really matter to be honest. how often in coversation am i going to have to remember which opposition word goes with whatever verb tense? as long as the person you're speaking with can understand you and vice versa it's fine! it's really really helpful to have a second language that's for sure!

and once you learn one romance language (french, spanish, italian, portuguese) it's pretty easy to pick up another since they are so similar when it comes to the mechanics, i'm thinking of picking up italian next year!

::yes::
I took 4 years of Spanish for my required credits, and now I'm done. Am I fluent? No, but combining those classes and my heritage I'm dang well near fluent. That said, by learning Spanish I also understand quite a bit of Portuguese, French, and Italian. If you're going into any kind of profession that would deal with immigrants, minorities, etc it would be great to know at least Spanish. I say go for it!

thanks, i think i'm going to do it. i talked to the people in the spanish department, and they said that after the minor i should be proficient in conversation, which is really all i need. i won't need to document in spanish or anything, i just need to be able to understand people when i speak to them.

Hey Sparx! Found this interesting. I'm taking my two years of spanish in school, but that's not where my credits are coming from. I have lived in a country in Asia since I was eight, and I speak the language fluently. cann't say more than Asia, but my dad does water-projects here like getting running water into kindergardens, and hospitals. so my third language is going to be spanish, which is the easiest class I've got! I wish a few more collages than 3 or 4 actually taught Blankastani in the U.S.

my college only offers majors in english, spanish, french, and german, but we can minor in english, french, spanish, german, japanese, chinese (mandarine, i believe), russian, and possibly a few others i can't remember. i think its just a lack of professors to build the 60 hours of classes to teach those other languages.

I know a smattering of russian, as the country I live in was part of the Russian Empire, but that's got the hardest grammer on God's green earth. I wouldn't advise taking it. Blankastanin is very unkown. the usual response when i say I live here is that place is only in the movies. it doesn't exist! makes me laugh!

I'm interested in this field too, is this recommended for everyone? Or is it just in your college? I wouldn't mind minoring in Spanish, I kind of like it, but I only took 3 years of it in high school.
