Landscape Lighting-What should I get?

Last year we bought some inexpensive Malibu lights for our landscaping out front. This year, two of the light covers have been broken off, three caps are bent (they were metal lights) and one had the bulb completely broken off.
I'm not sure if this is due to people carelessly walking through the yard or from the weight of the snow we had.
Anyhow, they look terrible and need to be replaced. I don't want to go with the same lights since what we bought just wasn't durable enough to last more than one season.
Are there any suggestions out there as to what I should look at? I would consider solar lights but I don't want the ones that only emit a glow, I'd like it actually light up. This would include two spotlights for trees as well.

If you want anything that actually produces light, stay away from solar. Unless there is something out there that I haven't seen, you only get a glow. We bought a few landscaping lights at Lowe's. I believe that they are metal. Very durable. We have had then in the ground for probably at least 3 years with no problems. They are on a photosensor, on at dusk, off at dawn. Metal may be more expensive, but they are more durable.
