~*~ Lake George, NY cottage ~*~ that won't break the bank?

We are goning in July and staying at Scotty's http://www.scottysmotel.com/rates.htm They seem to have the size room you are looking for. We never stayed here but I decided on this place because I'm told you can walk into town. It is right on the lake and the trolly stop. Which can take you into town without driving and also great escapes and the outlets. We have older kids and I like the idea that they didn't have to drive to get anywhere. I think it is rustic but most of lake george is. Thanks so much for asking this question I haven't been here in a long time and love all the information you are collecting. Have fun, What week are you going?

OP here :)

Thanks for the continued replies! Still don't have a place :worried: but its really fun looking! :rolleyes1

Sounds like a popular place and maybe we'll run into other dissers there!

Keep the replies coming!

I hate to piggyback on this post, but my family is going to Lake George at the end of July. My husband won a trip through his job, and we are staying at the Sagamore.

I'm not familiar with the area and would really like suggestions for activities. I have three boys ages 8, 5, 5. We are planning at least one day in Six Flags. How busy it it during a weekday in July?

There is a scenic train ride in Lake Placid, but there is also one in North Creek that is much closer to Lake George.

It offers nice views of the upper Hudson. Too bad you just missed the Thomas the Tank Engine visit!

You can also take the gondola ride to the top of Gore Mountain- which is so pretty!!!

I go to Old Forge all of the time---I'm lucky my parents have a place there! And it's less than 3 hours away.:cool1:

Here's the link to the Gore Mtn gondola http://goremountain.com/mountain/summerfall.cfm

and the link to the Whiteface Mtn gondola http://www.whiteface.com/newsite/summer/gondola.php

Whiteface is about an hour's drive from LG ... Gore is about 30-45 minutes away.

Lake Placid isn't all that far away from LG ... depending upon when your vacation is going to be, you could ride a bobsled there, etc. I would research lakeplacid.com or orda.com to see what activities are going on in the area at the same time as your vacation. Certain events (Horse Show, Ironman, for example) turn LP into a crazy town.

There's also a buffalo farm near North Hudson (http://www.adirondackbuffalocompany.com/) that you might want to visit ... it's something to see buffalo grazing in a remote valley in the Adirondacks!

Fort Ticonderoga is at the other end of LG (http://www.fort-ticonderoga.org/) which is a nice place to visit (IMHO it's better than Ft. Wm Henry).

If you're into some hiking, there are lots of hikes in the area (you could even drive to the top of Mt. Severance in LG, or even Whiteface if you're so inclined) ... some are easy, some are hard. Something like Buck Mtn is well worth the effort.

Agreed.

Do you mean Prospect Mountain in Lake George? I'm not familiar with Mt. Severance.

My guesstimate is Lake Placid is 90 min. from Lake George. I'm a Saratoga area resident (originally from further north) and we're planning on about 2 hours to get to Placid tomorrow.

Has anyone mentioned Waterslide World in Lake George? We haven't been in ages but are thinking of spending a day there this year. We usually make use of all the area lakes with our state park Empire pass.

I stayed here last year

it's a few blocks from the main beach and if you keep walking around, you hit Ft. William Henry and the town. We loved it. Everything had just been updated last year and it cost us $950 for the week.

Is it really? I have read mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, so I was a little concerned. My husband is fortunate enough win trips as part of his job, so we chose Lake George this year. I think it sounds like a wonderful location with a fantastic climate.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

It's an okay hotel ... but I don't think I'd spend the $$ to stay there since there are plenty of other options.

Oh well. I think/hope we'll be okay with it, since we usually stay in a Hampton Inn.
