Ladies: Who's delivered a big baby?

It's not all doom and gloom though - in my experience (3 kids), bigger babies are generally more content and all 3 of mine have slept through the night by the age of 12 weeks (DS was sleeping 7 hours a night at the age of 3 weeks) :thumbsup2

I have to agree with Wilma. My DS slept from 10pm to 4am...waking only for a bottle and then going back to sleep for a couple more hours....right from the get-go. My tiny twins were opposite and woke every 2 hours for bottles....or at least every 2 hours I was feeding someone ;-)

no big baby here, but I thought I would share my U/S experince...

22 hours before DS was born I had an U/S, I needed to be induced at 36w6d because of PreE, and the U/S tech estaminated his weight at 5lbs 10oz. He was excatlly 5lbs 10oz.

The only bad thing was I had no clothes that would fit him! Everyone told me I was going to have a big baby, plus I am diabetic, so I only 0 - 3 months stuff, my aunt and step mom had to go out and buy him some premmie stuff! He didn't fit into the newborn stuff until he was about 6 weeks old. Even now at three he is still tiny, barely in a 2T!

firstborn- 9 lb 10 oz, 22 inches long (two days past due date) I experienced every option except C-section (vacuum, forceps, epidural, etc. because she did get stuck)

second - 8 lb 11 oz, 21.5 inches long (right on due date, she is now about 4 inches too short for her age, only needed a couple of shots of Nubain, didn't have time for epidural)

third - 8 lb 9 oz, 21 inches long (exactly one week early, one shot of demerol, otherwise, all natural)

I've always heard the first is the smallest, lucky for me, mine got smaller each time!

Wow! There are a lot of mommies to big babies on here! I think what I'm most afraid of is laboring, pushing, having him get stuck, and then having an emergency c-section. I've also never had any sort of surgery, so that freaks me out, too. Plus, dd and ds were pretty easy birthes but much smaller than this little guy is predicted to be.
Like I said, no GD here, plus I was an average weight for my build before and have gained 27 lbs. so far, so nothing crazy.
I guess we'll see how it plays out! I'll definitely update with pics, hopefully sooner rather than later!
Just waiting and home from work today with a sick ds (stomach flu). T and P that I don't end up with it!!!

DS #1 - 7 lbs 3 oz. - just under 4 labor (I was induced after my water broke at 41.5 wks)
DS#2 - 8 lbs 3 oz - just over 4 hrs labor (on his due date no induction)
DS#3 - 10 lbs 3 oz - just under 4 hrs labor (induced 3 days early when my liver shut down)

As you can see size definitely does not matter in the length of labor. My first, the smallest is the one who got stuck and by pushing on my abdomen slightly they were able to push him down and into the canal. All were V deliveries and I had epidurals with all three.

Also, definitely don't go by the Ultra Sound predictions too much. They did the US the day before they induced me for youngest DS to make sure everything was good to go and told me he was 8lbs 8 oz - boy were they off. I was told after the fact that if the technician is off by even a mm in their measurements it can be a difference of a lb in the babies weight.

My larger baby was my easiest labor - 2 1/2 hours!! My first baby was 13 hours.

DD- 6lbs 4oz
DS- 12lb 5oz
DS- 6lbs 9oz

I'm 6ft and 14 years ago Dec 19, I delivered a 12lb 5 oz baby boy. I was expecting a big baby, the ultrasounds told us that, but I wasn't expecting a sumo wrestler. I delivered my Christmas elf after 28 hours of labor. I pushed him out no c-section. Isaiah was born healthy, but at 13 months he was placed in the hospital due to respiratory issues. Since then he has over 14 hospital stays due to asthma. The last hospital stay was 2 years ago.

It took a while for my body to completely recover. I had 2 separate breast reduction surgeries the first in 2000, and the last 2005. I had my youngest in 2002. He was born at 32 weeks weighing almost 7lbs, I always wondered if I'd carried him to term if he would have been over 10lbs. After he was born I closed up shop. "Out of business!"

My babies were both smaller babies but born a month early. DS21 was 7lbs 7 oz and came when my water broke at 8 months. DD20 was induced a month early due to me being on meds to keep me from having her for several months and she weighed 6lbs 1 oz.

Two years ago, at the age of 18 and at almost 5 ft tall, she gave birth to an 8lbs 7oz boy. Her ultrasounds were showing him being less than 6 lbs. He was evidently hiding his weight very well. She went all through labor in less than three hours and he had the cord around his neck so was born by emergency c-section after a couple pushes. I was terrified for her and was standing there crying and as they rolled her out, she looks up at me and said "I'll be alright mama. We can hold him soon!" Then I bawled!!

I have big babies and easy deliveries. I am tall and have a knack for being a good pusher even with a full power epidural. My first was 8#13 oz, second 9#,5 oz. third 9#,6oz, my last was 8#,8oz two weeks early. I swore he would be my 10 pounder. He was the hardest to deliver because he was face up, which is not ideal, much to the Dr's surprise! I don't think bigger babies are necessarily harder to deliver if they are just fatter. I would worry more about a big head size... Good luck!

I did...u/s estimates by the way can be + or - up to 2lbs so it's entirely possible baby is smaller than thought too.

My oldest was estimated by u/s to be in the 7ish lb range. Wrong..turns out he was 9lbs, 10 oz and 23 inches long! He was so long they measured him 3x in the nursery and the nurse told DH that in 15 years of doing that she has never measured a baby that long! :rotfl:

I was in labor for over 36 hours with him, never progressed beyond about 2.5cm and ended up having a c section.

My doctor also says not to pay too much attention to the ultrasound "guesstimates" they can be completely off.

I had big babies too!

DD-8 pounds 14 ounces
DS-9 pounds 3 ounces

Both no c-sections with an epidural.

DS has been measuring weeks ahead for a long time. They did an ultrasound at 36 weeks, and he weighed about 8 lbs. 12 oz.. The dr. said it can be off by as much as 10 oz. either way. That could be good; that could be bad! Plus, babies gain about 1/2 a lb. a week in the last month. We are going to induce at 39 weeks. My cervix is "favorable" and this isn't my first, plus I am of a bigger build (5'10"). I'm a little worried, though: ds was 7 lbs. 2 oz. and dd was 7 lbs. 4 oz. but are by xh. Something about combining dh and my DNA has created a whopper!!!
Any words of advice or success stories?

I'm 5'3 and my 2 of my 4 kids were over 9lbs (9lbs 4oz) I was induced 2 weeks early because the Doctor knew they were big. It was back labor and pitocin is no fun but the length of the labor wasn't too bad. 10 hours for my second child, 8 hours with my fourth.

I remember they were wrong with me - they were preparing for a big baby and she was only 7 lbs 11 oz. Still doesn't make sense to me, as my own body lost weight with the pregnancy....not sure how or why they thought she was going to be so much bigger. Minw was not based on Ultrasound though.

Best of luck to you!!!!!:goodvibes

I wish I could help but mine were 6 lb 9oz and 7lb 10oz. I had GD though and stuck to my diet. Although they were expecting the first one to be well over 8 pounds (they let me go full term).

I do know someone that had a child that was 13 pounds and yes it was natural childbirth :scared1: with no problems and she is not a large woman either (around my 5'6" height). I just cringe at the thought and was glad mine were smaller.

Update: I went in for an induction on Thursday. Everything went smoothly! He ended up being 8 lb. 4 oz. and 20" with a head full of dark hair! Thanks for your words of advice, ladies!

They were way off with me. They said that my DD would be about 9 or 9 1/2 pounds.

When she was born, 6 days late, she weighed in at 5 lbs, 15 oz. That is a HUGE difference.
