Ladies.........how do you cover your greys?

do you color at home? the salon? highlights? foils? what? does it last?
I have been doing it at home, but it doesn't last for me. I have tried several different brands, so I am thinking I may try the salon next. thing is though the last time I did color and highlights at the salon I was not impressed with the result, and it didn't last.
i need to find a good salon I guess.

I used to do it at home and even though I only have a few stray gray hairs here and there, I had a hard time getting the color to take. I even tried using color specifically made to cover gray and it still didn't work. I now get it done at a salon with much better results.

Salon all the way - I have a multi colored weave every 3 months or so. My biggest issue is I hate when my hair gets too blond so my hair chick is very mindful to weave in lots of dark auburns and reds but the blond is what helps camoflauge the gray. Sometimes I will have her touch up the crown if I have an event or a trip and want the fresher "just colored" look

Weave = sectioned hair colored and wrapped in foil over the entire head

For this I pay $150 including tip, cut and brow wax

When funds are low, I color (Not very skillfully) at home. I only buy that "Natural Instincts" stuff (Lasts through 28 or so shampoos) because the word "permanent" scares me. Well, anything "permanent" in my hands is a recipe for disaster!

When I can afford to, I'll treat myself to a color (Sometimes highlights) at the salon. The key is finding a knowledgable colorist, which sometimes can be difficult. I sometimes will stop women with color/highlights that I like and ask them what salon they go to.

Love having it done at the salon but it is just so pricey!

I usually have a good salon all over color done every few months then maintain it in between with the Perfect 10 root touch up. It saves me some $$$ that way and stretches out the salon visits. The Perfect 10 isn't the stinky ammonia type of hair color and it doesn't dry out my hair like the box all over colors do.

I have very dark brown hair (almost black), so the grey really stands out. Instead of getting my hair dyed black, I use purple! I liked it so well that I went and got streaks layered in, so the purple peeks out more. I love it.

I get the streaks bleached at the salon, then I color at home. The blue family dyes dont last as long so I have to dye it every 5 or 6 weeks, and that would cost an arm and a leg in a salon. Instead I buy professional color online for $8 and do it myself. Easy peasy.

No color yet, but I get highlights. There is no way I'd attempt it on my own. I'm too afraid that my hair would turn green or fall out.

There's no way I could afford to go to the salon - my hair grows about 1/4" per month... I'm more than 50% silver-white... and the rest is dark brown... those roots get colored every other week to keep up! I buy my color at Sally Beauty Supply and do it myself. I've tried pretty much everything they carry and like their house-brand the best - Ion.

That's one of those expenses I don't bother with.

I'd rather be grey on vacation than brunette at home!

I have been using Clairol Nice 'n Easy Gray Solution for the past 6 months. It works pretty well, especially since most of my grays are at my temples and hairline- I can see if they are covered well or not.

I might need to try the Sally Beauty Supply brand- is it as affordable as other home brands?

I colored my hair at home for years and really messed up the texture of it. For the next several years I did highlights, in the salon, every three months. I started not liking it because even the highlights weren't disguising the greys well enough. Now I go every six weeks and get an all over color done. They have a special formula to really cover the most stubborn of grey. Plus I like that they only color the roots and then rinse the color through the rest of the hair during the last ten minutes. It is keeping my hair feeling nice and not glassy. I do have to go every 6 weeks or else it starts to look bad. Up until that point, I can cover any root growth with a little "poof" at the part.

I wouldn't advise going with the full color unless you are prepared to go to a salon every six weeks. If you can afford it, it is well worth it!

MUCH cheaper than buying the box kits! The initial cost is higher, but then you're set for a good long while. I buy the big bottle of developer, maybe around $6. This lasts me 8-12 months. I buy a few bottles or tubes of color at a time, around $4-5 each - because I'm only doing the roots, I go through a tube/bottle every 3 or so colors, so let's say a tube/bottle every 2 months. Gloves I buy about once a year - $5. I've had my plastic mixing bowl for 15 years, but I'd guess they cost about $2-3, and I need a new brush every few months - $2.

So I'm spending around $50 a YEAR. If I bought a box kit every 2 weeks at around $10 each, I'd be spending $260!

I color my hair at home every 4-5 weeks. I use Matrix Socolor all over, and then use Matrix Colorsync to put lowlights in it.

I couldn't afford this if I had to go to a salon. Thankfully, I have keep my cosmetology license up to date so that I can purchase the products!!
