I have a child with kind of streaky blond, fine, pin straight hair (natural streaks from the sun).

We do a lot of swimming in the neighborhood pool which I suppose is heavily treated with chlorine.

Over the past few weeks it is getting a decidedly green tinge to the light blond parts of it!

Mothers, Beauticians, please tell me a safe way to remedy this situation OTHER THAN cutting it.

A friend recommended:
making a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applying it to wet hair letting it sit for a few minutes and rinsing it out.

I am a little afraid to do anything to it because I am not a blond and am afraid I might hurt her hair.

Did I mention that she is going to be in a wedding in 10 days!!!???

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

There are shampoos you can use to get the cholrine out.

I am out of the one I normally use, and for the life I me, i cant remember the name of it. I'll know it when I see the bottle.

There are some shampoos out there to help get rid of the chlorine in the hair. But I'm not sure about when it has affected it this bad already.
I know she should rinse or wash it each time after swimming.

Good luck

Agree makes a really good chlorine removal shampoo. It has a conditioner in it also, so it isn't too hard on the hair. I leave it in wet hair as long as I can to make it work better. It's safe enough to use every day. I buy it online from swimming supply sites.

Do they wear caps? I know they aren't very attractive, but they cut down on the chlorine's destructive effect.

Good luck1 :sunny:

Go to a Salon that sells Redken products. Redken Cleasing Cream mix about 2T with a packet of Crystal light Lemonade powder. On washed hair put it on her hair kinda like you were shampooing, cover wiyh a shower cap,if you have a hood dryer use it 15-20 min rinse deep condition. Redken also has a swin line that has some pre swim conditioners for your hair that work great. Also a good trim would be good. Make sure she at least rinses her hair with fresh water before & after swiming. Before will help alot.

Girls,
No, she will not wear a swimcap although her brother (really dark brown-almost black hair & on a swimteam) does all the time and her sister (dark auburn brown) does sometimes.

We use swimmers shampoo too.
I didn't know that you are supposed to wet your hair (before) swimming!
I admit I don't make her rinse it out afterwards because we usually run errands and stuff after going to the pool, and the shower at our pool is "dark and spooky" she says. If she needs to use the potty, I always have to go with her.

The bathroom is clean but not very well lit and really hot. We usually just dry off and put our shorts and t-shirts over our suits.

I have seen some of the teenaged girls spraying their hair with something prior to swimming. I wonder if I watered down some conditioner and sprayed her real good before she got in the water ........... do you think that would help protect it?

its been years since I did much pool swimming, but I seem to remember rinsing afterwards and using a conditioner helped.

My hair will turn green if I don't use Paul Mitchell's Three Shampoo - I use it all summer long! A couple washings and it should probably take that green tinge out of her hair.

The only thing else to tell you, if the shampoo isnt working and her hair is turningmore green..I would take her to a salon before the wedding. It will be expensive, but at least it wont be green for that.

As far as protrecting her hair before she gets in the water...I think wetting does help. I would also run to a beauty products store and ask them if there is a pretreatment you can spray on her.

My hair turns green too, I have to use the shampoo every time after I swim or shampoos dont work on me either.

My daughter, who is a blond, swam competitively for years and we experienced this problem. The women who cuts our hair told her to wet her hair well before entering the pool. This way the hair does not absorb as much of the cholorine. Also get a shampoo meant for swimmers to get the cholorine out. Most salons or beauty supply places carry it.

My daughter is a competitive swimmer, too. Not too much trouble during swim season but in the summer in our pool-look out!! Green hair. Rinse her hair w/ lemon juice-it will take the green right out. Use a good shampoo and conditioner afterwards because it will be really hard to comb.

This is a problem that I have been through. First, the problem IS NOT clorine!!!! It is from to high of a level of COPPER in the water, a likely source is well water or A pool clarifier with added cooper in it! There is a cooper remover , so If it is your pool please go to the pool store for the remedy!!

I too had to go to a wedding and believe me AQUA green hair on a 35 yr old mother of 2 is not a good look!!! ( my SIL actually thought that I did it on purpose, because it was so bright)

I had to go to the salon and had to have it bleached, not such a good thing but it did work. After that I used jon frieda BLONDES shampoo, and always wet my hair throughly before swimming!!

I hope this helps!!

I suppose you will get more advice than you can use but I use Ultra Swim on my kids. They also make a conditioner. It works nicely and does not strip the hair. If you do not find something that works as well as you would hope, you can take her to your local beauty supply store and show them the problem she is having with her hair and I am sure they would point you in the direction of something that would work for her without hurting her hair. Although you have gotten some really good suggestions here, too.

Years ago I had my hair bleached snow white. I'd get a yellow tinge from too much sun and a green tinge from chlorine. To remove any ugly colors my hair had picked up, I used FANCIFUL RINSE. Usually Walmart or Sally Beauty supply has it. After shampooing, work it through your hair as you would a conditioner. It works instantly and makes your hair shine. There are many colors to choose from and it washes right out with the next shampoo. Anyone working at Sally's could advise you if you're unsure which color to select.

::yes::

After paying for our highlights I got some advice. At the very least wet the hair beforehand and also Redken makes a swim creme stuff to put in the hair prior to swimming.
Always wash it after.

thank you everyone!

Looks like we will have to do some serious shopping. Today we wet her hair first, sprayed some conditioner on it and then washed it as soon as we got home!
