Wow these boards are great....I love how fast I get responses to my questions....thanks for all your help.

Heading to WDW in June, going with friends, we have 4 children with moderate to severe Lactose issues. Should we tell them when we call to book ADR's or is it enough just to let them know at the restaurant. A lot of the kids meals have ice-cream as the dessert...that won't work for 4 of the 7 kids we have.

Thanks so much!!!

I think I may have found a answer to this and thought I would post it. One of my books say to always let the dining place know within 72 hours.....I am going to just plan to tell the person when I make my ADR's and go from there......one book said at the buffets the chef came out and actually showed them what they could have. Let me know if anyone else has had experience with this.....

Thanks!!!

i am severely lactose intolerant so i can give you some first hand experience. (i'm also a vegetarian which makes it really interesting sometimes.)

i always make note when i make the reservation. i find it easier to say dairy allergy than lactose intolerant but i'm sure you can use either term. (i feel like they take allergies far more seriously.)

when we arrive and check in i remind them of the issue and they write "see chef" on our card for the wait person. the chef comes out - even in cases of buffets - and goes over what can and can't be eaten or modified and often times comes up with great alternative suggestions to what is available on the menu. some places can also get dairy free milk shakes which i think is a great special treat - i imagine the kids would love that as well.

be upfront and they will take very good care of you!!!

Definitely tell them when you make ADRs and remind them when you check in.

They have plenty of dairy free stuff available include Tofutti or Rice Dream Ice Cream in most restaurants

If you go over to the DisAbilities Board there is a lady named Brenda Bennett and she has a form you can fill out with all your ADR's and she will make sure the chefs know about the Lactose Intollerance. She even made sure that the chefs at the resort knew about my niece and had Tofutti Ice cream and Dairy-free cheese available so she could have pizza.

Disney is the most wonderful place to eat out with lactose intolerance, or any food allergy type problems. I too am lactose intolerant and have had wonderful experiences at Disney. Have them note on your ADR that the children are lactose intolerant. Remind them when you check in. The chefs are great at walking you through buffets. If it is a breakfast they will offer to bring out special waffles from the back. At most places the waffles will not be Mickey waffles, BUT at Chef Mickey's they will fix lactose free Mickey waffles!!!

At Boma, the chef made me a wonderfully yummy peach sorbet for dessert and brought it out to the table herself.

Also, at all counter service places, there is a notebook that lists all the ingredients for all menu items. Just tell the cashier about the intolerance and they will call up a manager to go through the notebook with you.

I was told that all of the french fries at WDW are dairy free and that all of the hotdog and hamburger buns are NOT. You might want to double check on this. I ate fries from several different places and never had a problem, but better safe than sorry.

Some places for desserts have special brownies that are lactose and gluten free.

And the ice cream shop on Main Street serves rice dream and soy dream (chocolate and vanilla).

Hope that helps!!! (P.S. sometimes it may take a few extra minutes for the manager at the counter service places to help out just because of being busy. Don't feel bad for causing a hold up in the line. Most people are very understanding and it's totally worth it!)::MinnieMo

I would suggest going over to the disABILITIES Forum. One of the first threads is the disABILITIES FAQs. On Post #3 we have a lot of information for people with dietary restrictions as well as useful links about special diets. To get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs from here just click on the link in my signature.
