Lactose free products

DD had several food allergies...last trip we had to avoid milk, chocolate, oranges, strawberries and shellfish. Well we thankfully just found out through testing and food challenges that she has outgrown most ( but not shellfish or her non food allergies). However we have discovered that she is lactose intolerant ( we suspected before we found her allergy) she does fine on lactose free products but she gets severe croup shortly after ingesting a small amount of non lactose free dairy. Does POR or any of the parks carry any lactose free products or should we just continue as we did when she had the allergy and use non dairy items ( cheese free pizzas and rice dream or tofutti ice creams)?

Anyone lactose intolerant that could offer suggestions because I am new to it.

No idea about in the parks, but have you tried Lactaid pills? You take them before eating, then eat regular stuff and they break down the lactose. This works for me with small to moderate amounts of most dairy (ice cream, cheese, yogurt); the only thing it doesn't work for, for me, is actual milk. Come to think of it, I'd love to hear if anyone's seen Lactaid milk anywhere on property!

She has croup (breathing difficulties and coughing) when she ingests dairy? That sounds more like an allergy than lactose intolerance. DS would have pain and gastrointestinal distress. He can have some milk, just not the huge amounts he used to want as a teen. He does better with milk with some fat in it rather than skim milk. The Lactaid products and pills worked for him but he does not want to buy special milk or use the pills, so he limits himself on dairy products.

One would think but...she recently tested negative blood and prick to milk after being positive before. She has been able to have glasses of lactaid or lactose free organic milk, sour cream that is lactose free, yogurt that is lactose free with no issue. Just the plain whipped cream caused to the croup...30 mins later. No issues since that one time. Is doing great with the lactose free stuff. She had about 2 glasses a day so far. Her allergist said if she was ok on lactose products her allergy had passed. For the past year she could have cookies, cake or bread with baked milk. I have to call her allergist anyway so I will bring it up...think he will say sensitivity or lactose intolerance bc he is sure she outgrew it.

I wonder if she has a lactose (sugar) issue or a milk protein issue.

I say this because my daughter who nursed for 14 months therefore exposed to lactose had lots of issues when we started cows milk. She had previously had milk baked in products, and also tons of yogurt, and even fermented dairy (such as lifeway probiotic). After keeping a food journal for 3 months with supervised experimentation we determined she didn't have a problem with lactose, but did better on lactaid because the milk proteins are mechanically broken down. In the same manner the milk proteins are destroyed in cooking or fermenting. She also did better with higher fat contents.

Once we got that resolved it opened a million new foods for her to eat. Just food for thought. If I hadn't spent so much time analyzing her foods and the effects and the various components I would have never figured it out.

Not sure if you will have a car but I got everything I needed at Publix or at Whole Foods on Turkey Lake Rd. to keep her foods as normal as possible while in WDW

I read your story on another thread too and had a similar reaction to other posters. Croup and breathing does not sound anything like a lactose issue. It is indeed confusing that she is consuming large quantities of lactose free forms of dairy. I didn't know that those foods proteins are also broken down a bit by the process. Maybe that is the right explanation for your dd.

Anyway, I did want to mention that Dole Whips are lactose free and the pineapple and orange flavor are largely dairy free. I say "largely" because there is some risk of cross-contamination from the vanilla flavor which is lactose free, but contains casein. I guess they mix the mixes in the same buckets. My DS's milk allergy is his least severe so we've allowed non-vanilla Dole Whips and he's never had problem with them, but someone with a very severe and sensitive dairy allergy may still need to avoid them.

My cousin's dd is lactose intolerant and I know they have never found Lactaid milk onsite. They have to give her almond milk or soy while there.

Interesting you bring this up because we are almost positive our ds reacted to the pineapple DW. I thought it would be safe but he seemed to be having a mild reaction. He doesn't like ice cream all that much since 1. he's never really had it often and 2. he has some sensory issues so he didn't eat much of the DW. But thinking it did have small traces of casein.

They claim they croup is possibly from severe reflux? Not sure we will have to see.

For those that say they figured things out...is there any cheese that works? Are they able to have pizza? Right now she eats cheese free pizza.

That could very well be the case. I have severe reflux and it exacerbates by asthma like crazy. Half the time my asthma attacks are triggered by my reflux.

Subscribing to this, as I'm lactose intolerant. I didn't realize that Dole Whips were lactose free.

OP, throughout the years I've learned that the harder the cheese, the less lactose. So a soft cheese like mozzarella will have more lactose than cheddar.

A good friend was able to cut her "allergy" list about in half when she realized some of the foods she was "reacting" to were actually triggering severe reflux, that was triggering shortness of breath. She's on significant amounts of acid reducer now and is able to tolerate many more foods, so that's definitely a possibility. Please note I am not a medical professional and this is anecdotal!

I don't know about lactose free cheese, but what about something like Daiya? It's not great but I've gotten "used to" it and it works when you want something cheese-esque on pizza. Perhaps it's an option for your DD?

So excited to hear the vanilla dole whips are lactose free! She could have that!!!!!

Yes I have to speak with her ped I was waiting for a sick visit to bring it up. We tried daiya for a while because she actually was allergic to milk for a while. She liked it on and off. Now says it sometimes bothers her stomach. She has a lot that bothers her stomach. She rarely eats bread...but only certain breads and certain days others she complains her stomach hurts. But she tests negative to grain allergies and negative to celiac.
