Labor Day Plans

Not necessarily, high tourist destinations probably but not everywhere. Obviously plenty of retired people take advantage of vacations during holidays :)
Retired people have the option of going any time. Our friends who have been retired 10 years say that was the adjustment they had to make, staying home on holidays instead of going to the lake the only time they could when they were working...

I'm retired. Not doing anything because you learn in retirement not to go anywhere because everyone else is off work and going places. So we will go out of town the weekend after Labor Day to avoid the crowds.
I guess we can't win. After 42 years of working in jobs where holidays are NOT days off, we retire and we still can't enjoy holidays.

Well...not traveling doesn't mean you don't have plans. I think the spirit of the question is "what are you doing?" which of course can mean traveling. It can also mean a picnic, a day trip to the beach, a wander around Target, waiting in line at Starbucks for 25 minutes and then going back home, hitting the library, taking a walk, washing your car, meeting up with some friends/family for a cookout, going swimming, sitting outside and reading, or complaining that you can't sit outside and read because of bugs? noise? whatever....or even staying inside your house and not coming out until the holiday is over and the roads are crowded with back to school and back to work traffic...or spending a few hours up in the tractor.

Well, we ARE going out on Friday for lunch.....with retired friends.....to try and beat the holiday rush. And with two Doctors appointments this week, we will be ready to stay home and rest because this is going to be a busy week.

So...then you do have plans, THOSE are your plans. Retired or not!!

We are hopefully going to our state fair one day and the renaissance festival the other if the weather is good.

You're kinda making this more about something it isn't. First it's your retired status preventing you, then it was about booked up and rates and now it's that retired people can go any time and these all sorta contradict themselves. I think you just haven't made it a priority yet to go on vacation, that's okay, maybe you will in the future maybe you won't :) But it's not your retired status doing that. Nor like another poster mentioned means you don't do things for holidays.

Yup. Plan to rest up for my 800 mile round trip the next weekend. Come back and rest the weekend after that, then head to Yosemite in the middle of the week with the kids back in school.
I just checked, the hotel room we booked for Friday and Saturday night weekend after next at $150 a night, is $260 a night this weekend.

All I am saying is we have options now NOT to go when things are expensive and crowded.

That's the same as many people. Hi not retired here and we have a very flexible travel abilities. Rarely are we prohibited these days from going whenever we want. This year we've been to Puerto Rico, Mexico and Europe none of which were planned due to holidays.

A tad different than your earlier point of

Your retirement status isn't the issue, you just prefer to not travel during holidays much like a lot of people who have the option to do it differently.

There's always staycations or day trips you can do to places. And unless it's a high tourists place I'm sure you'll find things you can enjoy the holiday. You may also be overestimating the impact it has on pricing and crowdedness. When is the last time you did a deep dive of trips to various places around holidays? Go out and enjoy being done with work is my point here.

Mine is a poor example but Vegas is never dependent on holidays, they are price dependent on what's going on like concerts or events. That's where you get the high pricing on hotels and crowds. And I'm not suggesting you go to Vegas just giving an example of a destination not dependent on holidays.

They are kind joined at the hip in our household. But you would dispute that today is Monday too, so there is that.

lol I know retired people who don't act like they are 100 already (and even then come on there are some moving 100 year olds). There are posters who are your age, in your situation, who get out and do stuff, they go on vacation whenever and sometimes that coincides with holidays sometimes not. This is about your preference not your retirement status. Like I said go out and enjoy it, others are :)

It isn't preference, it is a choice. We retired early and have no income and are living off savings until we reach full Social Security retirement age next year. So we are watching our money until then. The pandemic has made it kind of easy because our urge to take a cruise has been dampened by the norovirus and continuing covid outbreaks. Although we did do a 3,600 mile road trip in April to West Texas with stops in Lake Havasu, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Roswell and Big Spring Texas. And despite our masks and hand washing, came home with covid. First covid infection for both of us.

We were going to do the beach club as usual, but my sister's beach house in the county to our house is empty for the weekend as they're going away, so for a change of scenery we'll pack up our three doggies and head down there. Maybe we'll even wander up to the boardwalk one night....haven't been up there in years.

We are having a cookout on Sunday... probably will be getting the house and everything in order on Sat... Monday will be recovery day.

The usual weekend plans - laundry. Maybe I'll get caught up with the extra day 😂
