We live in Upstate NY and historically our schools go back the first Thursday after Labor Day. Labor Day is late this year, and that could result in our plans changing. Our 2015-2016 school calendar has not been released yet, and no one can confirm when the first day of school is going to be. Does anyone have any 'inside scoop?' Will the first day start on Tuesday September 8th? Thanks in advance...

No clue. It will depend on your district, they all seem to do things differently. I know some folks have booked, then found out they are starting school early. I don't want my kids missing the first days of school, but some people don't mind. We usually start right after LD, but since it is so late this year, I am guessing we will start before LD. Our calendar doesn't come out until about April.

I booked the cruise, but knowing when the first day will be will determine if we go to WDW before or after. I'm going to have to wait and see, I too, don't want the kids missing their first day of school.

I'm a teacher and my contract says I don't start until after Labor Day no matter what other districts around us are doing. So we are doing 10 days at Disney the end of August, beginning of September.

we are going the end of august/first week of september. DS is in preschool, but i did look into local elementary school schedules to get idea of what crowds might be like. it looks because labor day is so late this year, most of the schools in my area (NJ) are going back before labor day. a lot of them have teachers starting 9/1 or 9/2, and then the kids starting 9/3.
DS's preschool doesn't start until 9/8, so we're staying until the 5th :-)

My school district is starting the 8th, but the districts around me are starting the 2nd (teachers) and 3rd(students). so it does truly depend on the district, so we start late and we will get out late.

NY here. Our district calendar hasn't come out yet so can't say officially, but the consensus of many teachers/school personnel is we won't start until after LD. Whether it'll be that Tues. or Wed. nobody knows though. A couple surrounding districts' calendars have come out and they're all starting after LD. Two years ago when LD was late, we started after - I think we started the 7th or 8th? Whatever the Wed. was. So no reason to think we'd start beforehand this year.

Like miss1180 said, numerous friends of mine in NJ have said their districts are starting before LD for the first time in years so I think its going to vary greatly for the states that normally start in Sept.

We are in Northern NJ. We have NEVER gone back before labor day but this year we go back the Thursday before labor day. I already made airplane reservations, so my children will all miss the first 2 days of school (one is a half day). They sent out the calendar almost a month ago but
I had already made the flight arrangements. I wish they were staying with the old schedule and we can just finish school late.

Our school district traditionally starts the Tuesday after Labor Day. However, this year, we are starting September 1st. This is a major bummer as we have booked a bounceback for the last week of August/first week of September. Now we have to decide what to do. :worried:

I have lived in NY my entire life. Our area schools have never gone back before Labor Day. Calendars are not out yet, but I would be shocked to see that change after all these years.

I am kind of thinking we will go back after labor day as well. We usually always start the day after labor day, I thought I had heard, like someone stated up-thread, that some teachers contracts state they can't start before labor day.
