Lab grown meat, would you eat it on purpose?

As someone who loves the taste of meat and can't give it up but yet struggles with the ethics of farming and slaughtering animals, I am supportive of this concept. Unfortunately right now it is EXTREMELY difficult, laborious, expensive to do and is nowhere near at the stage of any sort of mass production. But every innovation has to start somewhere, and I do hope they keep going with it because I really feel this has the potential to be a total game changer.

One thing though is I hear that they were still having to use amniotic fluid of pregnant slaughtered cows in order to "grow" the meat but they're working on alternatives for that.

Would not eat it initially, maybe a few years down the road.

Sort of like Beyond Meat - seems like its worse for you than real meat with all the additives and although I've not tried it - I've not heard good things.

In theory the lab grown meat would not have those issues, but will it have the other issues of meat like all the things they inject into beef. Will be interesting but I don't think its anything we will see soon that it price competitive.

I try to eat a low fat diet...the cheese does me in. I have MS and apparently a study was done following 1,500 MS patients for 20 years or something like that to see how they fared. Evidently those that ate a super low fat diet, basically plant based, seemed to do better than those that ate a standard diet. I tried to go plant based for a while and found that my body does much better if I eat LOTS of veggies and grains and such and far less fat. Whose doesn't really though I guess.

Anyway, I don't even pretend to be plant based now but I do try to have a larger portion of my diet be plants rather than animal products. I have had a few of the meat substitutes and as far as these things go Beyond Burger is not horrible as far as taste and texture. However, I agree, the reason I was eating it was to try to cut down on dietary fat and a lot of that stuff has just as much, sometimes more, fat than leaner cuts of animal based meats anyway. So we get almost all of our meat from a local farm. It's grass fed beef. Not totally organic but certainly far better than commercial meat. Now, purists will argue that plant based fat is better for your body than animal based fat but I just try to reduce total fat, eat lots of veggies and grains, and don't worry about it. You can't control everything.

Just saw this & remember reading about it from time to time.

I would not have anything to do with it on purpose. To me it seems like one more attempt to convince the little people to save the good stuff for the 1% who would never eat it, it starts out with fetal tissue anyway.... so gruesome.

Do you eat meat from regular slaughterhouses? Veal? Eggs from non-free range chickens? It's all gruesome.

I'm not the one who this was addressed to, but since it has to do with my food practices, I'll answer. I am a hypocrite, in that I don't much check where my meat comes from, so long as it's fresh and without additives. There is really no way to humanely slaughter an animal-no matter how you put it, it's still being killed for food. I have a good family friend who hunts deer for food. I could never shoot a deer or any other animal, it hurts my heart-but so long as I don't see the animal being slaughtered I can put it out of my mind. I know it's hypocritical and wrong on many levels, but. Well. No good answer.

Not a chance! With locally sourced black angus cattle nearby from a herd that sustains itself we go with what you see is "what you get". We don't eat fake meat either :crazy2:

No, at least, not right now. Too many of these types of things have side effects that don’t show up for decades. I don’t eat a lot of meat, but I do eat it sometimes. For now, I would prefer the real thing.

Having just purchased my Thanksgiving turkey today, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thread title was the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where they ate the tofu turkey . . .

It will take a while, but it is likely that in the future meat will become a luxury product (more than it is now). Meat will become more and more expensive and not an every day thing anymore. It will price out the lowest incomes first. And from there the higher incomes.

We will have to rely in the future on alternative protein sources. Whether it is based or plants, insects or artificial products.

Depending on how the technology develops, we will see more products like this in coming years

I think I would once it is well-tested and perfected beyond any doubts or concerns. I don't have a problem with it conceptually anyway. I think it's a long way off from being viable though.
Same for me. I'm not opposed as long as it's proven to be safe and more environmentally friendly than factory farming.

Agreed, but when it comes to insects, I'm out. NOPE, HARD NOPE.

To be honest, I don't know. I eat all kinds of genetically engineered food. Seedless grapes and oranges. Plucots. I think half the apples in the store are manmade varieties.
We seem very concerned about things like rBST in milk, with dairy products not using it and advertising that on the carton, but then the Federal Government orders them to add "rBST has no impact on milk" or words to that effect.

Soylent Green...!

All kidding aside...perhaps someday but not anytime soon.

No on lab meat. No on fake meat. No on meat glue. Which is why I always buy bone-in meat. If I'm cooking or ordering a vegan or vegetarian dish, I like to cook or order extra veggies and nix the fake meats. It's a taste and texture thing for me.
