We have always been huge fans of San Angel Inn - until this past May when we were all underwhelmed by the food (sad because I LOVE the atmosphere..but anyway...) time to move on for a bit.
We need a Mexican food fix during our vacation.;) Any thoughts on La Hacienda? What time would be a good time to book an ADR in hopes of seeing Illuminations? TIA. :upsidedow

Don't choose this restaurant if your main goal is to watch Illuminations from your table. About a third of the tables have no view at all. Relatively few tables are against the windows. You can't request a table with a view. And you don't have the option of a viewing area outside like you do at Rose & Crown.

If you're going for the food, make it about 7 - 7:30 (assuming Illuminations is at 9) if you have already arranged to watch Illuminations from a good viewing spot on another night, and hope you get a good table.

Cannot answer your Illuminations question.

We liked it just fine. DH is a mole fanatic and he thought it was good. Their chips and salsa were good too. No quesadilla on regular menu or kids menu, but their queso fundido is to take the place of that. DD loves quesadillas.

We split the pork/mole dish. It seemed small at first. My parents split the same dish. Then came the sides. Each plate came with a side of rice and beans which were served in little bowls because we were sharing...so we thought. Until they brought another bowl of rice and beans for the sharers (my mom and I). In other words, we ended up with four bowls of rice and four bowls of beans--which turned into more than enough food.

So, just for that unexpected experience, we found it worth the money and very nice atmosphere. It was not crowded either so the food came fast and that's always nice after walking all day and being very hungry.

Thank you TDC Nala:) - I know our chances are not great getting a table with a view for Illuminations. We have several other nights planned at Epcot so seeing Illuminations that night is not a priority. I will shoot for 7:00 - 7:30 and see what happens! :)

Sorry to chime in late (and hijack the thread), but aside from R&C, which flavor of the San Angel restaurants can I watch IllunmiNations from (while dining)? La Hacienda de San Angel, La Cantina de San Angel, or San Angel Inn?

We heard R&C is a great experience for watching IllumiNations while dining (in fact our friends children were asked to "direct" the show!), but we thought Mexican might be a better option for our family.

Thanks!!!

Cantina de San Angel (all seating is outside) or Hacienda de San Angel (you'd have to get a table that has a view and there is no guarantee you will get one. About a third of the tables have no view of the lagoon at all. The Hacienda has no outdoor viewing area like Rose & Crown has).

San Angel Inn is located inside the Mexico pavilion and there is no fireworks view from there - it doesn't even have windows.

Thanks! That clears things up! Since you can't make a reservation at La Cantina, I assume the tables are first come first served (like any other Quick Service restaurant). Is it tough to get a table to watch the show (meaning, do they ask people to leave that aren't eating)? Sounds like a reservation is the best way to go if we want to dine during the show.

Thanks again!

I've eaten at La Hacienda twice and loved it both times! We eat fairly early and we like that. We also got a good table both times (near the window) with a great view (even without Illuminations). I LOVE the shrimp tacos and the Rosita Margarita. YUM! Here are some photos from our meals there (note the margarita flight too :cool1:):

I've never watched Illuminations from La Cantina but I believe that people are known to hold tables for up to an hour to watch from there. So yes, you need to be there early to get one.

And you shouldn't count on being able to watch Illuminations while you dine from La Hacienda. If you get a table with no view, you won't be seeing it. They don't allow requests for the view tables, because everybody wants one.

Thanks again, everyone. I think we'll reserve a table at La Hacienda and see what happens! Even if we don't get the window seat, it should still be a nice dinner.

I LOVED the margarita flight and hubby loved the tequila flight! We chose our favorite out of the margarita's and had one of them also! He chose the one with blueberries and I had maybe a mango one? Whichever, they were all good! We love us some margaritas!!!! And DD loved her dessert of Churros! The food was awesome too! ;)
