Ky Derby Marathon and Half Marathon

Are there any WISHers doing the Ky Derby races? It's April 24th. This will be my first time there, several of my local race walker buds are doing it with me. We are doing the half. I have heard that it's a party atmosphere with the crazy derby crowd there.

I ran in this last year. A group from here(Western KY) are doing it again, but I'm not sure if I'm going to this year or not. The Country Music Half is the same day and I'd kind of like to do a new one. The Derby one was neat--it was unseasonably warm last year--a little tough since we'd all trained in 50 degree weather but we made it. You do get to run the infield at Churchill Downs .

I did the full several years ago....there was a really good restaurant downtown. I think it was called Deke's (?). Good local stuff...soups...salads...etc. I ate there several times and was never disappointed. I hope y'all have a wonderful time!

I did the 1/2 last year. I enjoyed it so much that I'm doing it again this year. I The the course has been changed a little for this year, should be fun.

My group are all staying at the Hyatt. From what I understand it's $151 per night and it's a block from the shuttle bus to the start and close to the finish.

One of my race walking students booked our rooms a week ago. Did you know you get a ticket for the Ky derby horse race in your race packet? We are going to watch the race since we will be there anyway.

DH has signed up for the Derby Mini Marathon. I might be doing it as well, but I haven't signed up yet. We are local, so we don't have to worry about a hotel or anything which is nice.

Also, I just wanted to point out that you do not get a ticket to the KY Derby. You get:
"Admission to Churchill Downs for you and a guest (April 24th or 25th ONLY)". The Ky Derby is May 1.

Darn, I thought we got tickets to the big show. Oh well we will check out whatever is going on anyway.

This race doesn't fit into my schedule this year but it is on my radar. It will most likely be my Kentucky half at some point in the future.

I ran this race back in 2005. I believe 2006 was the year that they added Churchill Downs to the course. Looks like the race has more than doubled since then.

well now I'm curious as to what the new course will be this year. Last year it was unseasonably hot! And we were in full sun a lot more often than I would have liked. It was my first half, so I didn't have anything to compare it to--but I really felt like for that heat they should have incorporated more water stations. In September(after training all summer) I could have handled the heat, but not in April after training in cool to cold weather!
