I'm a big Kona fan, but I don't think it's exactly worth the money or a special detour to get there. It's a neat little cafe on the second level of the lovely Polynesian main building. I definitely have a warm feeling for it, but mostly because it was so close to hand (I was staying at the Poly when I first encountered it) and because it was laid back and had lots of sweet/salty combo plates on the menu.
But be aware: it's not super outstanding food or anything. It beats the holy heck out of quick service, but then so does sucking on a penny and a button. And while you're looking out on the lobby, you're also looking out on other visitors coming and going to the monorail (which I kinda like, but might not strike others as interesting).
When I stayed at the Contemporary the following year, I made a monorail trip to have breakfast there. This year, going to the Carribean Beach, I wont be bothering. If we were going during a low crowd period, I would consider it, but we're not.
It's a comfortable restaurant with good food. I'm not sure if it's worth going out of your way for, though. If you're staying there, definitely go. Plus, if you're interested in the Tonga Toast served there, just go to the CS restaurant downstairs instead. It's essentially the same thing for about half the price.
Kona used to be awesome, but I'm not thrilled with it anymore. On our last visit about six months ago, my French toast was made with bread that was so obviously stale, I could barely eat it. The portions were smaller as well. We may try it one more time on our next visit. Hopefully there will be some improvement.
I love Kona!!! We have not been to breakfast there yet, but we will be next trip! I love their dinner and from reading breakfast reviews, I know we will love their breakfast. Get the Tonga Toast!! YUM!
We've never tried the blueberry pancakes, but the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes are to die for!!! (actually, I ask for no pineapple, just lots of macadamia nut butter!!! ) We go out of our way each trip to eat at Kona for breakfast. The 100% Kona pressed pot coffee is our main draw and we are never disappointed! Check out the menu here: http://allears.net/menu/menu_kcb.htm
I had Tonga Toast for the 1st time last week - and it really is to die for! The Macadamia Nut Pancakes were also fabulous. It was the best breakfast I've had onsite, ever. I didn't think it was very pricey - each entree was about $12. I guess for a big family though that does really add up. I will definitely be making it a must-do on everytrip!
Depends how far you're trekking. We took a boat and monorail to get there and decided that was a waste of effort and time. The macadamia nut pancakes are good, but nothing I can't make at home. The Tonga Toast was disgusting and was left behind on the table (out of a party of 8 we couldn't finish half of them!). The coffee IS good.
I like Kona, especially for dinner, but it's not worth wasting an hour of travel time to get there. Afterall, it's just breakfast food.
