I just wondered if anyone had eaten at either of these. It will be my birthday if all goes to plan with this rebooking business and I have booked GFC for breakfast and fancied trying somewhere new.As we are only doing wishes that night as doing a DTD day and a pampering day for me birthday.
Has any one tried either Kona or the Wave?
Any other suggestions for a special meal?
thankyou

Eaten at Kona Cafe twice, first time excellent, no hesitation going back last year, only problem was we got a terrible server she wanted to take our dessert order at the same time as our entree (they also tried this at Prime Time) I told her I wouldn't know what I wanted until I had eaten my entree, while we were still eating she was back for dessert order.
All the time we felt rushed, didn't enjoy at all so she only got $5 tip from 4 of us.
As we left Mart & family went in, they got a different server and a totally different experience.

As for a special occasion, even though I like the food there its not somewhere special to me for surroundings, its all open & busy around you. Matt has chosen GFC for his 18th Bday meal. I like Captains Grill, Yacht Club, nice food and quieter.

Never eaten at The Wave.

we have eaten at Kona Cafe twice, once for breakfast (Tonga Toast) and once for dinner. Both times the food was great. Our server was a bit slack at breakfast but I suspect because, as a party of 7, she assumed (wrongly) that she would automatically get 18% tip. We only saw her once, when she came to take our breakfast order. A runner (or possibly a different server) brought our drinks and food and we were still waiting for the check 20 minutes after we'd finished eating. I eventually had to ask somebody to go and find her and then she came up , flung the check on the table and tried to run straight off again. I stopped her and told her we wanted to settle immediately. We paid the check in cash and I explained that we would not be leaving the 18% included tip since we didn't feel the service we'd received from her was worthy of that amount and then gave her a look that dared her to argue with me. Needless to say, she didn't. We left just under 8% tip which I still thought was over-generous.

Needless to say, it didn't put us off going back. I am always willing to give somewhere a second chance. When DH and I went for dinner a couple of years ago, both the service and the food were excellent. We are going back in August for dinner and may well give breakfast another try also.

We've had dinner at Kona 3 times and doubt that we'll be going back. The first time we ate there several years ago we had a great dinner all 4 of us really enjoyed it. The second time, we had the crab cakes as a starter they were cold/luke warm in the middle, they burned my steak so had to cook another one. so obviously we had to sit and wait for ages when we eventually got our meals my steak was undercooked (I asked for well done) So it went back to the kitchen where I think that they put it in the microwave needless to say it wasn't very good!! :scared1: After that we gave it a miss for a while. We then decided to give it another try in Nov last year. This time I decided to stay away from the steak and went for the pork chop, I couldn't believe that this was undercooked!! It was one thing having the steak undercooked but pork!! I don't know whether other people have encountered these types of problems. Kona seems to get good reviews, but it hasn't worked for me. It's the only Disney restaurant where we've had a bad meal!

We've never eaten at the Wave!

We've had lunch and dinner at Kona.

Loved both. But preferred lunch. I think of it as quite a casual restaurant so maybe not birthday-y if you wanted something special?

We've not tried the Wave.

Also. Don't you think Kona and The Wave sounds like a band? Lol

Yes like katrina and the wave:rotfl2:Ok may just book it for a normall night.
I'm trying to pick places I didn't eat with my ex:sad2:Cus I'm a bit sentimental. Have booked the GFC for breakfast. Will have a think. Don't want a romantic night :rotfl: Thanks for all the comments

I found the food at The Wave very bland and the restaurant just didn't seem to have any kind of atmosphere. Maybe it's better at dinner? We went for lunch. We're trying Kona for the first time in October and we're really looking forward to it. :)

Had dinner at Kona 4 times and the food was good each time, service okay, good, v. good then bad.
Like Wayne, very rushed. Server asked dh to pay as she brought our desserts, which he did, also included the 18% tip to card. I had the chocolate fondue with fruit and thought the strawberry tasted a little strange, on inspection I found the other two to be mouldy. I eventually got her attention and she asked me if I wanted the strawberries replacing, I replied that I would like a fresh dessert and while I was waiting could I have a coffee (we had only 2 drinks (no refills) as dh had a beer) so were still entitled to one more on DDP. She left me with the bad dessert & seemed to go an order another but we waited another 20-25 during which time another table got served with coffee. I caught her passing by & stated that I hadn't had coffee or dessert yet & off she went again (I must say, she did seem to be working hard when she was around, just not for us or around that much). After 5 minutes we'd had enough & decided to leave as we walked away, DH (never complains) saw red & went back to the table, picked up the dessert & asked for a manager. Now, I didn't hear the conversation but when Dh walked away he was very angry. Seemingly, he told her the whole story to which her response was "did we want a fresh dessert then", Dh told her that her attitude stunk & demanded the tip be removed. She basically shrugged & said she would see to that. Just to add insult to injury, we were charged the tip but had it removed at SSR. Now, after all that, I would go back as I really like it but would certainly not put up with that sort of treatment. I don't feel that it's a place to celebrate as it is quite casual & it is open to the walkway between the monorail & the bar.
Pleased that you can still go, sorry for the tough time your having.

Love Kona, booked to go back this year. Very fresh tasty food. Planning on trying the cocktails this time ....hiccupp!

Great meal and service at the Wave last year. DH asked for it to be on the list for this year.

Kona we will be trying for the first time this year.

I had the best food and the best server of my trip at The Wave. I did find the restaurant a bit noisy though. That wouldn't put me off going back.

To be honest I think most resturants are a bit noisy. Iv decided on captains grill on my birthday. A lovely meal there 2 years ago. I am still going to try kona and the wave. Wanted chef mickeys but all full. As we are staying at BLT would it be possible to do a walk up? Or go ask in the morning for evening meal? Not sure abt walk up as never done it.

I've eaten dinner (more than once) at both Kona and The Wave - I enjoyed them both lots and wouldn't hesitate to go back to either but I'm not sure I'd choose to go to them for a 'special meal' as both are quite noisy restaurants. Large, open plan feeling, lots of tables.

If I had to choose then The Wave would edge it due to the dimmed lighting so has a slightly less cafeteria feel that Kona kinda has by being in the lobby.

If atmosphere is not an issue and just food, then I'd probably choose Kona - but then I'm a sucker for their bread :)

if you have a complaint with a server take up with a manager,we had a meal at rainforest and meal came to $50(quite a few years ago) and service was bad.w apid for our meal with a $100 TC and waited for the change, and waited and waited. finally got the eye of a manager and asked(also told him of the bad service as well) where was our change.he went of to enquire came back with the server and her explanation was,"because we were English and didn`t understand the tipping protocal she thought it was ok to take a 100% tip". needless to say us and the manager was appalled. We got a full refund and a fee meal next visit.we now always pay cash for our meals so this wouldent happen again
OP we love the Wave and have booked for Aug

100% TIP!! Guess she was chancing her arm, blooming cheek. Glad the manager was appalled as well & dealt with it well. Unfortunately, as per my post, the manager was worst than the server in that she seemed to think it was our bad service & mouldy fruit was acceptable.

one the Americans use when they get bad service is leave a penny(1 cent).the server gets the point then, you have left a tip in comparison to the service
