I would ref to the TSA and not southwest.

I've seen people at the gate area at an airport using knitting needles.

I've carried DP needles (socks), circular needles (sweater), and even embroidery scissors and never had a problem.

Yes, you can. You can also take scissors as long as the blades are shorter than 4 inches.

They're allowable by TSA. I just wanted to add that if you travel out of the country, other countries' TSA equivalents may not allow knitting needles. I made a bad assumption on a trip to Mexico and figured that if I could bring them on the Delta flight down, I would be able to bring them carry on for the trip back. They confiscated my knitting needles and a really nice pair of small scissors. (It was too late to get them in my checked bags and shipping them from the airport was not an option. I was sad.)

This is correct. Knitting needles are not allowed in a carry-on from Mexico, as well as some other countries.

i took knitting needles on grandson's MAW trip in june of this year. they were in my bag of stuff for the boys and me to do that was under the seat, not in over head. nothing was said at security.

I have too. At Logan airport Oct, 2001. Passengers weren't allowed to use metal silverware at the restaurants, but TSA let the knitting needles through security.

They allowed corkscrews than too (still do), but, not manicure scissors. One wonders how they select the items.
