So last night I'm standing in the bedroom folding clothes when all of a sudden my knee cap "slips" and my leg sort of hyperextended itself. It's happened a few times since then. WTH is going on???? And how can I stop it???

ETA: I googled it and found what I think it is. Now to wait to see if it really is that and then what to do about it. I had a torn cartlidge on this knee and had surgery way back in 8th grade. I'm going to go for a walk tonight and go from there.

take it say as an unstable patella can fall out of place. I would get to a doctor if this continues to have them look and feel your knee. That is the truly safe way to proceed.

Well today it is a little more sore than yesterday and I didn't even do anything yesterday!

I didn't walk last night, I was supposed to run this morning since it is supposed to be 100 today. I'll try to go out for a mile or so tonight. If the pain persists through the running then I will have to make a dr. appointment. *sigh*

Definitely see the Dr. Some kind of brace or taping may help, but I would talk to the Dr. first. Good luck.

Even more soreness and stiffness today, no swelling though, made a Dr. appointment for Tuesday. I'm staying off of it until then. :(

It honestly sounds like an acute injury that needs attention.

OK, doctor appointment moved to today. lol

I think sooner the better since I need to find out what is wrong, fix it, then finish training for the October half and January full. Not to mention walking all over Britain in a few weeks! I just hope I don't get crutches and it's nothing that will sideline me for too long! :(

Went do PCP yesterday, referred for an x-ray and ortho. Got x-ray yesterday and went to ortho today. At ortho I saw the doctor. He squeezed my knee. I yelped. He squeezed other knee I didn't do anything. Squeezed bad knee again, more yelping. Bottom line, he thinks its chondrosis (I'll Google that later) and the cortisone injection will help it. If it is a tear, which doesn't show up on the x-rays, the injection will do nothing. So hopefully the injection will treat the problem, if not then we know it is a tear and I'll have to deal with that after vacation. So I got the injection and went on my merry way. I follow up in a month.

He did do other tests, I just remember the squeezing vividly. :rotfl:

Oh, the injection was easy-peasy. Although I'm limping more now than I was before. lol

As for running, let my pain be my guide. If I have any knee pain at all, NO RUNNING! I don't plan on even thinking about it until atleast Monday.

I am a little confuse. By chondrosis, I am assuming chondromalacia (wearing of cartiledge). I do not see how a cortison injection would help that. That would likely be due to a knee cap tracking issue. The only way I can think of for addressing that is strength training. I did not think it would hurt that bad to squeeze it though, if that was the problem.

He must be assuming some inflamation in a tendon or ligament?

Anyway, hope you get it resolved soon. Good luck.

Yes, it is chondromalacia. The injection was to help with the swelling in the surrounding areas. You are correct it will not do anything for the cartiledge problem. I do know that the squeezing it hurt like a mother! (Which I'm guessing was do to the inflamation.) Step 1 was to treat it with the cortisone injeciton. If that doesn't work then he's ordering an MRI. He did say that the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the cortisone will help him decide which way to go next. I guess it's sort of diagnostic as well as for the inflamation. If it works, great. If not then its off for an MRI to see if there is a tear. (I had arthroscopic surgery on this knee in 8th grade for a menisicus tear.) I think that's pretty much it. If I'm even remembering it all correctly.

BTW, I feel better this morning. The pain is pretty much limited to directly under the knee cap now. Before it was sort of all over the area. That's something atleast. :thumbsup2

Glad it is doing a little better. I hope it is not a torn meniscus, though I know a few who have had surgery and were back to running in about 3-4 weeks.

Some leg strengthening exercises may help if the issue is with the way the patella is tracking. Foam rolling could help as well.

Maybe something like Osteo Bi-flex may help. It is given to help prevent cartiledge damage, mainly due to arthritis, which is not too different than what you are experiencing. I believe it is safe, so there may be no harm in trying.

Good luck.

The doc did say no running for 7-10 days... I hope. Cortizone is definitely a great tool for inflammation but it also softens up the cartilage. Take is easy for a week.

Sounds like a great follow the diagnostic path doc. Make sure to go back if the condition resumes.
