Son brought home a stray cat about 2 months ago. I kept insisting he take the cat to the vet.

Well he didn't get there soon enough and the kitten is in heat. I know what is going on but is there anything we can do for her till we get her to the vet?

She tries to sleep for short periods but is very restless. I feel so bad for her but I also would like to sleep.

Help please.

UPDATE

I called the SPCA this morning. She has an appt. for next week. They can do the surgery if she is in heat. They said the procedure was more invasive them. She shouldn't be in heat by next week hopefully. This is day 5 and she seems a little better so hopefully this is winding down.

Call your local vet and see if he will go ahead and spay the kitten anyway, even though she is in heat right now. We had to have that done to one of our kittens. I was weird, it was like she went into heat and wouldn't go out of heat. She began spraying everything, it was bad. The vet went ahead and spayed her for us right then. She didn't have any problems at all recovering.

We had one of our cats spayed when she was in heat, too. She was driving us absolutely NUTS. It seems like there is a greater risk of complications (bleeding, maybe?) when a cat is spayed during heat but our cat was fine. Call the vet and ask about it. It might be worth it!

Thats so nice that he took the cat in! I have taken in two strays since last year, both males. One was already neutered and the other is getting snipped at the end of the month. Does anyone know what happens if you wait too long for neutering a male? i just hope i haven't waited too long. I've heard they'll mark their territory. It's been fun having them, they play well together and get along great with my two dogs

Thank you. The cat is adorable but I feel bad for it right now. I am waiting to hear what my son heard from the vet.

..and poor you!

I have 3 kitties, all 'take-in's'...and though I cannot tell you a thing about being in heat, I know that I had my females spayed at a very young age. They were only about 4 months old and recovered wonderfully.

Hope the Vet can bring relief to you all....good son to have a heart like that!

there shouldn't be a problem with the vet spaying her now.

A male cat will spray to mark his territory. It smells bad. He may begin to roam around the neighborhood looking for a female if he goes outside . The risk there is he could get into fights with other male cats. From my experiences, neutering takes care of all these things i mentioned. :paw:

We called several vets that were open today. Wow there sure is a wide swing in prices for the procedure.

Also tried the Humane society and SPCA but they weren't open today. The SPCA website says they will do it for $20. Hopefully we will get in touch with them tomorrow.
