That's a good idea - will they take your appliances out? Are they qualified to do that?

That is a good idea. Ours were so obsolete that I don't even think they would have taken them. ;) On the other hand, we put ours in the basement and it was worked out perfectly for extra storage.

I had to have white cabinets. That lasted about 6 months. One weekend I couldn't take it anymore and painted them Ocean which is a couple of shades darker than apple green. I painted the island brick red. Also, instead of tearing out your cabinets, have them refaced. Basically they take thin veneers and apply it to the cabinets. It can then be painted or stained. Then just order new doors. My mom and dad did this and theirf kitchen looks brand new. It also costs thousands less.

Our countertops are wood in Jatoba which is also called Brazilian Cherry.

The island top is Creme de Bordeaux which is a veined granite and each piece is very different. My brothe and his wife have it in their kitchen and you wouldn't know we have the same granite.

I would also recommend having a larger company do the work. They'll have more employees and will get the job done much more quickly.

My neighbors had their kitchen cabinets refaced. My the time they ordered the new doors, replaced some of the obsolete shelving, etc. It was almost as much as new cabinets. I was surprised. I love the Creme de Bordeaux. Every slab is different.

DH and I are looking to update our kitchen. If you are interested in Kraftmaid, take a look at this site. http://cabinetwarehouseoutlet.com/wordpress/ There is a KraftMaid outlet in Ohio. This fellow will shop for KraftMaid products for you. Now, I am not interested in him doing my shopping, but I would like to take a weekend trip out there to see what they have, and purchase if I find something that I like!!!

They will take any appliance that have any resale value. They will also take doors and windows. You probably will have had to remove the windows. They also take light fixtures, furniture, hot water tanks, water softners. I have seen anything you could think of at our local HFH. Give them a call and see what your local HFH will do for you. It is a win win for everyone. Susan

Lowes and Home Depot will negotiate prices too. Our order was around $2500 and they took 10% off the total, plus another $40 off another item.

Some other factors:
Are you going to still be living there. Things go faster if you can vacate the premises.

Wood floors - pre-finished or site finished? Site finished take MUCH longer.

Cabinets? If you are happy with current layout you should be happy with hanging pre-made cabinets.

Cost will vary the most depending on the size of the kitchen.

I am in the middle of a major remodel right now. I have a small kitchen plus am changing some walls. I need to make use of every inch of space available so I am having custom cabinets made. Probably not a big difference in price - but it definitely takes longer.

My demo started on Sept 1 exactly. This included removing some very complicated built in shelving (home-made) in two rooms in addition to gutting the kitchen. Even the soffits in the kitchen were torn out. The floors in the entire place are being replaced - site finished. Also all new doors, trim, molding, baseboards, etc.

No one has promised me an end date. I have a second home so that's where I am living. My guess will be Nov. or Dec.

As of this minute I am not sure what the counter tops are going to be. I have this really complicated bar area that comes out from the kitchen open area and then will wrap around a wall into the living area. I have picked out a very unique and colorful laminate but we are not sure if the fabicator is going to make this happen or not.

I know -It's kind of weird that I am installing top of the line customs floors and cabinets, but I am not using granite. It's not a cost thing. I am just tired of it. I've had granite for almost 20 years. I have it in my New Orleans home and like it. But the laminate color looks fabulous with the glass tiles I am using as a backsplash in the re-do.

I will probably have this condo for the rest of my life so I am doing it for me. I will do the bathrooms next year - but just couldn't deal with doing all of it at once. I closed out my late dad's house (which took 8 months of hard work - so much stuff) just TWO days before this started.

The housing slowdown has helped. I was able to get the most experienced craftsmen who usually work on high end new housing for my little remodel. I am getting a lot done for not a huge amount of money.

It probably depends on regional differences. To redo their kitchen was going to cost $50 thousand. Refacing it was $3000 and the doors which are solid cherry cost another $1500. $50000 vs 4500

Actually, I am going to reuse all of my appliances - that's why I was asking. I wouldn't want just anyone coming in and doing demolition if there was a chance they would damage my appliances. I guess I'll wait and see...

That's good to know. I bought a white frig. in Jan. when I thought I was just going to be redoing the countertops. It's practically brand new so I really didn't know what to do with it.

Forget the way they do demo on HGTG. My guys were very patient and methodical about the removal. No wildly swinging sledge hammers. I had a very nice white flat top stove - I forget the brand, but it was higher end with a lot of extra features. They made sure it got donated in good shape.

No they would be very carefull. They want what they are takimg out to remain in good condition. It would be a waist of their time also otherwise.
The person they send is affliated with HFH and will check first to make sure your cabinets will come out without any trouble. If they feel it will be a problem then they do not remove them.
